Skeptics in the Pub: a critique of skepticism by Frank Swain

Along with several other atheist/humanist/skeptic groups and individuals, we will again be joining Hampshire Skeptics Society at the Roebuck Inn in Winchester for a stimulating talk - plus drinks and socialising. Let's keep the GALHA badges and T-shirts visible in all humanist socialising arenas!

Skeptics in the Pub Winchester hosts a guest speaker on the last Thursday of every month. Skeptics in the Pub exists to provide an opportunity for people who are interested in science, skepticism, rationalism and critical thinking to socialise and discuss matters of interest. The meetings are open to all regardless of beliefs and each month’s talk is followed up with a challenging Q&A session. Winchester SitP is part of a national and global network of SitP events and is organised by the Hampshire Skeptics Society. The Hampshire Skeptics Society is a non-profit organisation for the promotion of science, reason and critical thinking, humanism and a secular life.

An entertaining evening, though Frank Swain's views were rather blinkered, I thought (even though he is a sceptic!). He was not interested in the role of religion in scepticism, or, indeed, of LGBT people! I look forward to future talks at The Roebuck.

This talk wasn't so much my kind of thing as last month's. Still a great evening though. In the Q and A session I challenged the speaker (politely!) on his negative attitude to campaigning, citing GALHA's record on human rights actions, Protest the Pope, etc, and I got quite a bit of support from the others in the audience. Had a chat with the organisers who are going to give us (GALHA) a link on the Hampshire Skeptics Society website. The best thing about Skeptics in the Pub is the atmosphere and the lovely people you meet there.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
