Holyke Urbex @ Full Moon

This is a full moon night. Some of us will be at the NECCC conference nearby and we wanted to do some urban exploration in what is probably the Urbex holy grail of Massachusetts. Half of this town seems to be abandoned and dilapidated.

We will meet at the railroad overpass on the canal, there is parking nearby at the above address (private company, but open, should be OK to park there at night).

Here is a photo page to give you some ideas of what to find and below are some impressions on a daytime scouting I did. There will be three locations, but you can choose to stay in one place and keep going. Our meeting point, in particular, along the canal will have plenty of opportunities to shoot.

Suggested equipment: super wide to medium zoom lenses will work. Some of the most dilapidated structures are hard to get to or only through trespassing, you might want to bring a longer zoom to shoot over the fence for "urbex lite"

As always, everyone is on its own, if you pair up in teams of 2-3, you can roam around safely and perhaps feed off of each other's ideas. As always, this is weather dependent, check back on this page for updates on event day.

Out meeting point:

Tight, uhm... security!

It was truly a very fun filled and exciting night, with lot of opportunity for night shots. Only drawback for me was it was too FAR. :)

Truly an amazing and incidentally a happening night. Learnt a lot and hope I can use certain things to my advantage in the future. Most definitely looking forward to the next one!

Truly the Holy Grail for Urbex photography. Acres of abandoned industrial sites, bridges over canals, stacks, railroad trestles, oh, and those essentials: backhoes and elevated platforms. Warm night with no wind. Lots of great opportunities.
An altercation between locals and a group member's fall (thankfully she wasn't badly hurt) reminds us all of the risks inherent in doing this, and the care we need to take to keep ourselves safe.

Reached here! Seems pretty scary. Looks like the sight where World War Z might have been shot. It's going to be interesting tonight!
