English Morning Tea

It's a great way to enjoy using English as well as enjoy the beautiful Gold Coast weather!

Please RSVP! We need to know how many people are coming in advance.

The only way to master English is by speaking and responding to others in English. Books and listening isn't enough. It's also more fun and rewarding!

We aim for English students to speak 70-80% of the time (and the native English speakers to be talking only 20-30% of the time).

Starting Time: 9:00am

Finishing Time: 10:30am (though members often stay later)

Place: We'll meet at the sign/obelisk in the photo(s) ("Broadwater Parklands"), over the road from the Gold Coast Language School (see the picture below).

What to bring: Pen and paper is provided but feel free to bring your own (the focus will be on speaking and understanding English not reading it).

Cost: $5 to cover expenses

Questions and Answers:

Why $5 for most meetings and $10 for picnics?

Even though members bring food and drink to the picnics there is never enough for everyone so I have to buy approximately $50 worth of food and drink before each picnic to cover the shortfall (as well as plates, napkins, cutlery etc). At other meetups I collect $5 from members to cover the cost of the Meetup site and other expenses. Meetup is free for people who simply attend events but organizers must pay $72 so they can set them up events, manage, and advertise events for the benefit of other people.

What sort of people come?

We have an enthusiastic and friendly group of native speakers as well as English speaker from other parts of the world. We have native speakers from Australia and around the world all of which have had experience either teaching English or have had significant experience with non-native English speakers in other countries.

Ages of both facilitators and students range from 18 years old to 65y/o, male and female, from various walks of life (various backgrounds). We have had students from Japan, Brazil, Russia, China, Indonesia, Korea, France, and Germany.

Do I need to bring my passport or form of ID?

Yes if we are going to a bar or any place which serves alcohol. If you don't bring it then please don't order any alcohol- otherwise we all may have to leave.

Why should I come?

You will not find a better opportunity to learn about the Australian culture and way of life than here (we are also eager to learn about the culture of your native country).

Learning in a classroom is important however you will need to put those skills and vocabulary into action (especially your grammar) and doing so in a relaxed atmosphere is also an important part of the learning process. Phrases use in daily conversation would never be adequately covered in class as (a) material is usually over 3 years old (b) material is usually prepared somewhere else (or even in another country) (c) material is written in a structured way to ensure it fits into an established curriculum and hence will never sound truly natural.

What should I bring?

A piece of paper (or a notepad) and a pen would be useful for you to take notes and write down new phrases that occur although I usually bring enough pens and paper for everyone. If writing is impossible (a walking event, karaoke, picnic etc) then you may want to bring a voice recorder (I use my iPhone).

Can I bring my friends?

Absolutely- the more the merrier! It's also great to come by yourself!

Who organises the GC-ESL group?

Luke Frohling. He's spent most of his working life living in Japan teaching English and build a small news distribution company in Tokyo. He likes karaoke and meeting new people and runs a small video production business here in the Gold Coast.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
