Science for Kids: Session 2 Ages 6-9 yrs

This is a 6-week course.  New students welcome!

Students will discover how food chains represent a simple way to show the flow of energy and the feeding relationships of producers and consumers. Students will examine the six major biomes on earth and how each is represented as an ecosystem. Students will learn that seasons occur because the earth turns on its axis as it orbits the sun. Next, we will look at the different phases of the moon and how it takes a little more than 27 days to orbit earth. Students will create a model of the eight planets that orbit the sun. The last class in this session will focus on our solar system and beyond. Topics include: asteroids; meteors, constellations, comets and the Milky Way galaxy.

Instructor: Gabriela Stiles has worked in education for the past twenty years. At Orange Coast College, she ran the career library for seven years followed by working as a teacher aide in the elementary school level for two years in Long Beach. After receiving a Bachelor degree in Art history with a minor in history, Gabriela received her multiple subject teaching credential at CSULB. Gabriela has taught high school biology and physical science for the past nine and a half years before deciding to homeschool her son. The home school community has reignited her passion in the learning process, on all levels.

This is a drop-off class, if parent and child are comfortable.  Parents are always welcome to stay and observe.  Lighthouse has an enclosed playground for younger siblings.  The trampoline is off-limits, though.

To sign up one child, RSVP as yourself; to sign up two children, RSVP +1, etc.

11/18/13 Today we looked at the different Biomes present on earth, illustrated the organization of living and nonliving factors in a pyramid diagram and created a Biome in a box. Some friends did not finish and took some materials home to glue or tape down. Here are some more ideas for dioramas, lots of fun : ) http://www.pinterest.com/ljkaplan/ecosystems-diorama-project/
"Magic School Bus" video series has the following episodes related to today's class: "Rainforest Ecology; Coral Reefs; Deserts and Wetlands. I will bring in a couple boxes with misc. supplies tucked inside for the friends absent today in case they want to put one together at home. Next weeks we will talk about seasons. Thanks, Gabriela

It was great to see both familiar and new faces this week when we explored food chains : ) Friends organized props to show how energy flows through a food chain and creating a food chain pyramid (or web) to illustrate producers and consumers. We reinforced this idea by "feeding" the cheetah all that is represented in the food chain and made a fold-able food pyramid. I will bring supplies from this class to the next class for friends who need them.
Reminder *There is no Science for Kids class on 11/11/13. Our next class on 11/18/13 will focus on biomes and friends will make a "biome in a box". Below is a fun link (short movie) for friends to review the food chain concept. Have a great weekend. http://www.brainpop.co.uk/science/variationclassificationandevolution/foodchains/
