Earth Science for Kids: Ages 6-9 yrs

** This is a 5-week course.  New students welcome! **

Children are natural scientists! In the first class friends will explore the Scientific Method by asking questions, making predictions and coming to conclusions when engaging in simple hands-on experiments. If friends are interested, a mini science fair can be put into place at a later date. Next, we will study the water cycle and watch how water changes from a solid into a liquid and then a gas and how this is constantly playing out in our atmosphere. On the following week we will learn about the rock cycle in a fun way! Week four will focus on plate tectonics where students will learn that our land masses are constantly moving and this process has been going on for millions of years constantly re-shaping our earth. In our last class for this session, friends will study volcanoes! They will also have the opportunity to make a small model of one.

Instructor: Gabriela Stiles has worked in education for the past twenty years. At Orange Coast College, she ran the career library for seven years followed by working as a teacher aide in the elementary school level for two years in Long Beach. After receiving a Bachelor degree in Art history with a minor in history, Gabriela received her multiple subject teaching credential at CSULB. Gabriela has taught high school biology and physical science for the past nine and a half years before deciding to homeschool her son. The home school community has reignited her passion in the learning process, on all levels.

This is a drop-off class, if parent and child are comfortable.  Parents are always welcome to stay and observe.  Lighthouse has an enclosed playground for younger siblings.  The trampoline is off-limits, though.

To sign up one child, RSVP as yourself; to sign up two children, RSVP +1, etc.

If you are not using charter funds, feel free to pay online or bring check/cash to first day of class.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you!

Today we review plate tectonics including plate boundaries in relation to earthquakes and the kids made a paper model. I wanted to pass on the information to get more of these types of models online as well as an awesome volcano (cross section) one. Next week we make a step book on Earth's layers and talk about volcanoes. http://cp.c-ij.com/en/contents/...

This past Monday we studied the water cycle using hot water, ice and two glass containers. The kids were able to point & describe the process of evaporation, condensation and precipitation : ) This Monday will focus on the rock cycle (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic). Anyone is welcome to bring rocks or minerals to share. I wanted to share a few upcoming and exciting events that are happening in our area that pertain to science.
