Monument Road Ride - West to East (up the Fruita side)

We're going to celebrate the 4th by riding the Monument! We'll meet up at Rigg's Hill on South Broadway (just west of the intersection of South Broadway and South Camp Road), ride South Broadway and Hwy 340 to the Fruita entrance, then it's up and over the Monument on Rim Rock Drive. We'll make a point of stopping at the Independence Monument View pull out to see if we can catch a view of those rock climbing nutcases who will be laughing in the face of death as they climb Independence Monument in order to plant an American flat at it's summit (it's a July 4th tradition). Since it promises to be a warm day we're going to start out at 8am, which means we want to be on our bikes and leaving the parking lot at 8am, so plan accordingly. You've probably done the Monument before but just a reminder: bring a pass or $5, and bring front and rear "get you seen" lights. And lots of water.

Glad we started at 0630 instead of 8 as it was getting hot by the halfway point

Hey John - Nancy and I are going to start from Fruita at 6:30. Sorry to mix it up (after changing to Riggs Hill for us), but we do want not to hold people up as much, so if we get a headstart up there we'll all be more likely to get done in a more modest time.

I think Dan and Nancy Ford are starting from their place in Fruita, keep a look out for them. Or drop them a note and ride together. We'll see you up there.

Ok. looks like I am in for the moment. The wife was wanting to do a ride but not up the Monument since she has to work there tomorrow afternoon as well. If I'm at the Meet Up location at start time Let's ride! If I'm a bot late then take off anyway!

Yea, I'm hoping to leave the parking lot at 6:30 sharp, so if we're not there just head on up South Broadway and I'm sure you'll catch up with us somewhere along the way.

For anyone unfamiliar with the route or where we're planning on meeting tomorrow morning, allow me to refer you to this link (and no, I'm not just trying to generate hits): http://www.tomorrowhillfarm.com... (pdf download of about 2MB, so it takes a couple seconds, unless you're on dial up in which case let us introduce you to the 21st century some day). The only difference between what the map shows and what we're doing is that we're planning on riding it counter-clockwise, opposite the direction arrows.

There's an arrow and a note on the map showing where Riggs Hill is located. In fact, the arrow points just about right at the parking lot. If you have any questions drop me a note.

Lio, if you like we can arrange to meet you at the Albertsons on Broadway (the original meeting place) at 6am and you can ride to Riggs Hill with us.

yes John that will be better for me to meet you guys at Albertsons store and get a little more work out on the ride, I need to get ready for the Tour of the Valley.

Nancy and I will start at our house in Fruita at 6:30 also. This should put us slightly ahead of you so we will look for you and wait in a shady spot or meet you uphill at the Visitors Center. From there we will ride to the pass or to high point.

Start time is now 6:30am. That's not just a meeting time, we're going to try to be heading out of the parking lot at 6:30am.

Next question, thought, suggestion: I just got back from riding the Monument this morning. I left my place at 7am and hit the base of the east hill around 7:30am, and I have to say that I felt like a turkey on Thanksgiving morning. It's a good thing that road switchbacks, this way I got roasted on both sides. And that was a full 30 minutes earlier than we're planning on meeting on Thursday! If we meet at 8am it'll be near 9am before we're on the west hill, and we will most likely fry. So I'm thinking a much earlier start time would be a good idea. My suggestion is 6:30am at Riggs Hill, that way we'll start climbing before 7:30 in all likelihood. 6:30 would be early enough to ensure a cool climb but late enough that we won't be riding in the pre-dawn darkness. Best of all, we'll be getting back in plenty of time to go have other 4th of July fun. What do you all think of that?

We are good for 6:30am and Riggs Hill

Stephen, if I was driving there I'd offer to bring you a coffee and a bucket of cold water to help open your eyes. Yea, it's tough getting up that early, but climbing the hill in the (relative) cool of the morning makes it all worth it.

6:30 at Riggs Hill is good for me. We should be done with the first climb before it gets to turkey roasting time.

I like Randy and Tim's idea of meeting at Rigg's Hill; in fact, Randy suggested that last time and I spaced it out. So Rigg's Hill it is.

Hello John this is Leo, we rode the other day around palisade. I have a question when you mentioned lots of water you mean that should I bring my camelback?

Being a contrarian, I believe you might need more two bottles of water to get from the Visitor's center back to the end of the ride :-)

      July 1, 2013

    • Stephen F.

Typically If I'm going up Fruita end I'm a bottle up, refill at the visitor center, and two full bottles from the VC get me across and back down. From the GJ end I refill BOTH bottles just because. However, in light of the past week I am thinking of bringing a 3rd bottle just in case because while the initial climb up Fruita is not as steep the slog to the high point is 17 miles of climbing basically. An extra water bottle doesnt add that much weight and we aren't racing so does it really matter? Now watch: If I can go do this ride I bet I show up with two bottles, ;-)

John, Riggs Hill is a better meet up location for me also. Earlier would be better to avoid the heat later in the ride.

    July 1, 2013

  • Randy F.

John, it would be a lot more convenient for us to meet at Riggs Hill. Of course we could start there anyway... But seems like that would be a good starting place.

We're debating starting a bit earlier to lessen the effect of how slow we are too.

I need to check with the 'real boss' about her plans for me on the 4th but if I'm clear I will plan on this. I live in the Redlands near Broadway Elementary so I will either ride over to Albertsons or pick you all up around South Camp and S Broadway
