Dan's "American Fryers (Not!) Early Road Ride"

Join Dan and Nancy Ford every Tues and Thurs READY TO RIDE AND ON YOUR BIKE AT 6:30 A.M. (!) at the Fruita & I-70 Colorado Welcome Center and ride at least to the CNM Visitor's Center or as far as The Half Tunnel, Black Ridge, High Point, or Cold Shivers and then return by the same route.  By going up the Fruita side of the Monument we avoid the Glade Park commuter traffic as well as enjoy a gentler climbing and descending grade.  Bring a required headlight and taillight for the tunnel (and to avoid a stiff federal fine) and $5 for entry pass or your annual pass, and try to ride single file especially if cars are nearby. Please bring a spare tube, pump and mini-tool on your bike. Also bring plenty of water and snacks. If you are running late or wish to cut off 200' and 2 miles, we will pass by the West Kiosk parking area at about 6:45. If you are not ready to ride at 6:30 (or 6:45 West Kiosk) we will assume that you are faster than us and want to give us a head start:)  We hope to continue this ride on a regular basis every Tue. and Thur.

EVERYONE PLEASE READ JOHN HODGES SAFETY NOTE BELOW REGARDING AVOID OR USE EXTREME CAUTION IF YOU PLAN TO RIDE IN FROM THE GRAND JUNCTION SIDE. (Thanks John for all you do for Grand Valley cyclists.) Also, read my recent post on HikeNBike regarding a good confidence building ride we had 7-30.

Since I haven't heard anything at all today, and since the Monument hasn't sent out a press release, my hunch is that the paving on Little Park will be on Monday and Tuesday. So take what I said and apply it to Dan's Tuesday ride.

Hi Dan, Hi Randy, Hi everyone else. A quick note on the road conditions on the Monument that may affect you if you end up coming down (or going up) the east side of the Monument or up DS Road like you did last weekend: Mesa County Road and Bridge is paving a part of Little Park Road either tomorrow and Friday, or Monday and Tuesday. As you may have read on our FB page, their contractor will be bringing very long dump trucks up the east side of the Monument and up DS Road to access Little Park Road. These trucks have to take the turns really wide, meaning that if you're coming down the hill you could find one in your lane. And if you're going up the east side you may get run over, seriously. The last time they did this I had the closest call of my cycling life, I had to bail off the road and off the bike to keep from getting crushed. So to stay safe (and alive), best to avoid the east hill and DS Road both tomorrow and next Tuesday.
