'Social Saturdays' is a monthly social group and meeting place for the LGBTIQ communities based in Newtown.
When? The 3rd Saturday of every month, 4.30pm - 6.30pm. Arrive before 5pm for entry.
Where? 43 Bedford St, Newtown - we are convenient to the Newtown CityRail station and buses on King Street.
Who? Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer. All genders, all backgrounds and all ages over 18 are welcome.
What? Activities include board & card games, seasonal celebrations, movies, Mardi-Gras preparations, and more.
How? Just turn up; there is no need to register. Join this Meetup to receive updates & reminders.
A gold coin donation is appreciated to cover the costs of running the group. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
Each session will have a different activity or theme, with facilitators trained to keep everything moving.
Please note:
- this is a drug -and alcohol-free space.
- we will not admit entry after 5pm and there are no pass-outs.
- we have an unavoidable flight of stairs, sorry to those with mobility issues.
- we have no on-site parking but there is street parking locally available.
- our events are also promoted in other places; RSVPs on Meetup are not a good indication of numbers.
Social Saturdays operates within the 'Safer Spaces at GLCS' guidelines - here's an excerpt so you can get a sense of what we mean by safer spaces.
GLCS considers a safer space to be:
- Built on mutual respect and personal responsibility;
- Welcoming and supportive of the wide range of diversity within the LGBTIQ communities;
- Free from homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism and other negative discrimination;
- Respectful of personal boundaries; and
- Respectful of the physical space, facilities and materials provided.
Creating a safer space for everyone is not just about physical safety - it is also about making people feel comfortable, welcome, included, and emotionally safe in other ways. Everyone is responsible for helping to create a safer space for everyone.
Facilitators will go through the safer spaces guide and other useful group info in more detail with all new participants upon arrival at Social Saturdays.
