READY FOR A READING MARATHON???? THIS WILL LIKELY BE LENGTHY READING.....BUT YOU MUST BE AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN LOUISIANA REGARDING THE COMMON CORE INITIATIVE ..... and TAKE ACTION TO GET THIS OUT OF LOUISIANA AND GET LEGISLATION TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN!!

I attended the BESE meeting....... was there for 11 hours and didn't get home until midnight. The room was packed and over 70 people spoke. Many more opponents of CC in the audience than pro-CC.....
As usual for BESE, each speaker had only 2 minutes to make a statement. NO questions were answered by BESE..... although several times James Garvey and a few other BESE members did question the pro-CC speakers after they spoke. I think only ONE anti-CC speaker got a question.

There were several pro-CC GROUPS in attendance...... the Stand for Children group (financed by Bill Gates) and ExxonMobile (Bill Gates is their largest stockholder) were the most prominent.

Rather than write another review.... I am posting info from others who were there and have written what I think are very accurate accounts:

A letter to State legislators from someone who attended and her observations:

Summary of BESE meeting from another attendee:

The day following the BESE meeting, the board passed some "emergency" policies supposedly to address some concerns expressed on the !5th: http://theadvocate.co...

Here is a good evaluation of these new BESE policies;

The Oct 16 Rep Stokes Townhall meeting on CC was well attended by over 100 citizens. by a show of hands, the audience was overwhelmingly anti CC initiative.

I am posting parts of my letter to Rep Stokes regarding my thoughts and observations and hope this will give you a "review" of the evening. I hope that if you attended, you will also write to Rep Stokes with your comments. I believe she shares many of our concerns and still has many questions about this initiative.
email : stokesj@legis.la.gov

Letter to Rep Stokes:

Thank you for sponsoring the recent CC Townhall meeting and attempting to get answers from our public officials in Education.

I thought your questions were excellent as were the ones posed by the audience. However, I do not believe anyone who came with strong concerns about the Common Core Initiative left feeling like we got honest or thorough answers. The feedback I am getting from parents is overwhelmingly negative.

You hit the nail on the head when you said there was a lack of trust regarding Supt John White , BESE., and the CC Initiative.

When thousands of LA parents, teachers, and concerned citizens show up at BESE meetings, townhall meetings, the Gov's office, etc to express concerns that parental control and state sovereignty are being dissolved via the CC Initiative...... with actual proof and documents, we are essentially told to sit down and shut up because "45 states have adopted common core." We are told that "experts" in Washington DC and other states have decided that CC is the best thing for LA. We are told we are "misinformed" and playing "politics". To us, that is the ultimate example of how parents" voices no longer matter.

When we produce documentation that John White released the SS#'s of 700,000 Louisiana students to InBloom, a company that is NOT just a "garage" for information but one that clearly states its purpose is to SHARE info with 3rd party vendors, we are told it is no big deal because we withdrew. https://inbloom.org/s... If it were not for PARENTS exposing the InBloom contract, BESE and the public would likely still be unaware of this agreement that John White denied existed until he was exposed. Guess we should just "trust" him?????

The Louisiana Dept of Education (LDOE) joined with the Lousiana Workforce Commission (LWC) database via John White in August of 2012. WHY then would he also join InBloom in January 2013 if we just wanted a storage "garage"??? (See agreements attached).

Please read the MOU between the LWF and the LDOE. Please note that the confidentiality of student personal information is regulated by FERPA..... which now affords our students NO protection.
The Federal DOE can now proclaim anyone or any group an "authorized representative" who then may have access to personal information without parental consent because of the regulatory changes they made to FERPA in Dec 2011. This is a good review of the FERPA changes in the context of the EPIC lawsuit. http://epic.org/apa/f...
WHY is Louisiana pretending that our children have any protection? This is why we are mistrustful!

Please also note the list of information this data base will collect....please note that it also includes private info on teachers and in some cases, NON-public school children. Please note the very broad category of "student assessment" ...... which can include almost anything. http://www.thenewamer...
Is all this data being collected now.....NO....... is the STRUCTURE being set up to collect this information.... ABSOLUTELY.

Have you asked John White or the pro- CC business groups for documentation of their claims that America is failing? Have you asked for documentation that increasing "standards" improves education? We are finding that there is no supportable data for these claims.
Here is one teacher review and discussion..... I can provide MANY more that concur. http://christienken.c...

Please note that the US test scores, when compared to other nations, have been unjustly categorized as poor or substandard when that is not true when apples are compared to apples. WHY are we being sold this fraudulent information? http://www.schoolsmat...
THIS is why we have little trust!!

John White is also being dishonest when he states that we have no agreement to implement the PARCC assessments. [ Please first see the PARCC agreement with the Federal DOE which clearly states PARCC will provide DOE with access to "any and all " student data.
Secondly, please see the signed MOU between Louisiana and PARCC and what we agreed to. (both files attached.) ] Furthermore, our schools are being told that the PARCC tests will be piloted in a few areas this year....and will be fully implemented next year.

This from the LADOE website:

"In 2014-2015, students will take annual assessments in English language arts and mathematics that are fully aligned to the Common Core State Standards. These assessments are being developed collaboratively by Louisiana and a coalition of states called the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). Students across all of these states will be using identical assessments which will allow Louisiana to benchmark its progress against other states."

(cONTINUED FROM ABOVE LETTER)

If we are not committed to PARCC , why is Jefferson Parish borrowing $35 MILLION to implement changes required for PARCC?
http://www.nola.com/e...
Personally, I am becoming more convinced that all this "assessment" confusion is more about setting up data mining than it is about valid student testing.

Why is the LDOE and John White sending mixed messages about PARCC testing?
Here is an interesting article from Vermilion Parish regarding the last minute CHANGE in implementation of the CC standards: http://www.vermiliont...
Strange how the FULL responsibility for curriculum was DUMPED on the schools at the last minute so that teachers had insufficient time to create a meaningful curriculum and most were driven to the "common core aligned" resources for info and help!! This is why we do not trust John White and BESE. This is not a game where we randomly move pieces around a board....this is about the education of our children.

Most parents in the United States do not want a "one size fits all" education system..... which is UN-American to say the least. Education is about enabling individuals to be the best they can be and allowing them to pursue a future based on their dreams, ambitions, and abilities. An American education should NOT be about "training a workforce" based on the wants and needs of BIG govt and BIG business.

Wonder why some business groups support CC??? Most see profits and/or a trained "workforce" with little effort or expense on their part. Here is a statement from the Chamber of Commerce: http://dianeravitch.n...

Lastly, I would like to express my extreme disappointment in the format of your townhall meeting . When we met in your office, you were very clear that you intended to have only PUBLIC OFFICIALS who were answerable to the people regarding Common Core on the panel. Your press release said you would have White, Garvey, Jones, and Meza. On the day of your townhall, I received an update via email from your District Office which stated the panel would be White, Garvey, and Jones. I shared this email with over 1,000 concerned citizens who are following the CC events. The outrage at the meeting was palpable when we discovered that you had added two school principles who were pro- CC. These principles are NOT public officials and had no standing to be on that panel...... they should have been seated in the audience and allowed the same single 2 minute opportunity that you afforded us!! Instead, they very effectively monopolized much of the available time to speak and in my opinion, had nothing but personal opinion to back up their statements. Statements like "We expect our scores to go way up" are meaningless. Furthermore, the inclusion of someone from Stand for Children on the panel was a slap in the face to concerned parents. This group is an NGO that has received $9 million from Bill Gates to push his CC agenda AND they are corporate shills for the education "reform" movement that wants to privatize our public education system. The Stand for Children rep belonged in the audience...not on the panel.

I would like to know why Dr. Meza did not attend, and why he was replaced with 3 non- officials. I am also curious as to why no Jefferson Parish School board member was in attendance. The School board seems to be conspiculously absent in the Jefferson parish meetings.

I am hopeful that you left the townhall meeting with many questions and some "mistrust" for what was represented. I would be gald to meet with you again and/or provide you with more information. The groups of citizens opposed to the CC Initiative continue to grow...... we are totally motivated by our concern for the children of Louisiana and the preservation of local and state control of our education without interference from the Federal government, Big business, and unelected special interest groups funded by BIG money .

Thank you so much Terri for that excellent letter. It encompasses every element of disappointment I had with the meeting. I arrived late, but was still able to observe two hours, which was basically two hours of concerned parents and citizens voicing relevant, intelligent and fact-filled objections to Common Core, which was met with either non-answers, or answers which skirted the issue.

We NEVER got an answer as to why kids are not allowed to bring their schoolbooks home. It was shocking to think that a child had to sneak a book out of the classroom to bring home to show her Mom. And then more disturbing to hear the anti-capitalist, anti-American indoctrination which was included in that book.

I know for a fact that indoctrination is the goal, because it was already the goal when I attended school 40 years ago. The Marxists in charge have simply honed their skills and have now bought compliance with millions and millions of tainted dollars. Selling our children to the highest bidder. Disgusting.
