The Lycian Way is a long-distance footpath in Turkey around part of the coast of ancient Lycia taking its name from the ancient civilisation which once ruled the area and is approximately 510 km long following an historic trade route, mainly along coastal paths heading inland at times through traditional mountain villages and farming communities between Fethiye and Antalya.
Listed by The Sunday Times as one of the world's top ten walks, it was officially opened as a way-marked route for trekking in 1999
The route is graded medium to hard; it is not level walking and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
Breakdown of costs £50 deposit payable on RSVP. £135 balance due 6 weeks b before departure. Does not include flights these are self book, see below
Saturday: Fethiye - Kayakoy - Olu-deniz
Beginning at the Lycian Amyntas rock tombs which are carved into the rock face overlooking Fethiye’s habour, we take the Roman paved road which leads us over the hill to Kaya village. A steep climb rewarded with views over the valley towards the deserted Greek Orthodox village, the subject of Louis de Bernieres' book ‘Birds Without Wings’. We will head to a local village cafe for lunch and have opportunity to take time to explore the many deserted houses and churches. After lunch we continue up over the hill to Oludeniz passing through the pine forests and stopping to take in the spectacular views of the crystal clear bays and the blue lagoon at Oludeniz. Walking down to the shores of the lagoon, there will be time for a swim.
Approx. 6 hrs trekking, 12km
Packed lunch (optional Village lunch)
Uneven paths with some loose scree and some steep ascents
Sunday: Ovacik - Kirme - Faralya
Beginning at the original starting point of the Lycian Way, we are immediately rewarded with views over Oludeniz and the
surrounding islands. Continuing along goat paths, low scrubs and pine forests we arrive at the village of Kozagac, where we can see the remains of a massive rockslide, a result of the 1953 earthquake. We continue through fields to the tiny hamlet of Kirme and on via cobbled paths past a rock tomb cut into a boulder then following the route down a deep valley carrying a millstream down to Faralya, a farming and bee-keeping village lying along the cliff top road above Butterfly Valley.
Approx. 6 hrs trekking, 13km
Long gradual ascent to Kozagac, path uneven
Monday: Faralya - Kabak
This walk takes us along the flank of Baba Dag, an easier route with pine forest on our left and views of the sea on our right
to the farming and bee-keeping village of Kabak.
From here we descend the path towards the beach where there will be time to have a swim and a drink at the bar before heading back up the hill to meet our transport back to our accommodation.
Approx. 4 hrs trekking, 8km
