West Wycombe and the “Hell Fire Caves” circular walk

West Wycombe and the “Hell Fire Caves” circular walk.

Meeting point outside WH Smiths, I will have a meetup sign. We will be taking the 09.36 train from London Marylebone Station, arriving at Saunderton 10.15 Journey time 39 mins

Cost £9.40 for a group of four people traveling together (I can not guarantee you will be in a group of 4 please see below) organiser fee £5 total £14.40

The walk takes us from Saunderton railway station southeast over the Chiltern Hills through a mixture of woodland and meadows through the village of Bradenham, and Naphill common to Hughenden Manor which was once home to Benjamin Disraeli a well-known Victorian prime minister. We will stop here for lunch. The route from Hughenden then heads west across Downley common past Le De Spencer’s Arms which is of the earliest built sites on the common and is likely to have served travellers since the middle ages. Continuing across the common we come to West Wycombe Park and the Hellfire caves. The caves are network of man-made chalk and flint caverns which along with St Lawrence’s Church were constructed in the mid-18th century by Sir Francis Dashwood founder of the founder of the Dilettanti Society and co-founder of the notorious Hellfire Club, whose meetings were held in the caves. A brisk climb takes us to the the summit of West Wycombe Hill once an ancient hill fort now dominated by the Dashwood mausoleum built in 1765, the Mausoleum is a vast roofless, hexagonal construction built of Portland stone and flint an easy walk takes us through Hearnton wood and back to Saunderton
