Leaving Hassosks Station we follow a path along the railway until it joins the Clayton tunnel with it's Victorian castleated towers. We turn east and start our ascent of the downs passing the Jack and Jill windmills. We continue up to a ridge of chalk and grassland where we will be afforded panoramic views inland and out to the sea and the south coast.
The trail climbs over the second highest point on the south Downs, Ditchling Beacon, once an Iron age hill fort and used as a beacon that gave warning of the Spanish Armada. Continuing east we pass Plumpton Plantation and climb Black Cap before descending and following the River Ouse to the gates of the Norman castle which lead us into the Medieval high street of Lewes. We can stop for a drink (optional) then take the train back to London.
