Hike England's highest mountain on the longest day of the year

We will be staying at Langdale YHA which is a rambling Victorian mansion owned by the National Trust. Standing in picturesque grounds between Elterwater and Grasmere, it’s ideal for hiking breaks exploring central lakeland and is the perfect base for a challenging walk to the summit of Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain.

The hostel has great views of the dramatic Langdale Pikes and if the weather is good you can spend summer evenings on the balcony with great views of Windermere and Bowness.

The main focus of the weekend will offer an opportunity to climb Scafell Pike, the highest summit in England on Saturday, followed by a shorter walk exploring Langdale on Sunday.  The walk to Scafell Pike from Langdale is slightly longer than from Wasdale, but in our opinion its the most enjoyable route.  The total distance is about 12 miles with an ascent of 1400m and is achievable for anyone who is reasonably hill fit, but it will be a long days walking.  Saturday 21st June is Summer Solstice so plenty of daylight!

Important note:  The walks are dependent on weather conditions and if the weather is bad, or we believe conditions are dangerous, then we will choose alternative walks.  However, we will do a walk whatever the conditions.

Cost for the weekend £145.

£30 non-refundable deposit required to confirm your place with balance due one month before.

To book, RSVP Yes now and make your payment via Paypal.

Includes:

• Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

• Guided walks to the summit of Scafell Pike on Saturday and Langdale Pikes on Sunday.

• Accommodation in our own small private bunk rooms.

Does not include: Friday meal, lunch on Sunday (can be arranged separately with the hostel, or bring your own).

Great weekend and great day for it. Enjoyed meeting everybody. YHA food never again....

    • Kevin

Thanks Griff, it was good to see you. The food was the worst we have had at a YHA and I have sent them an email raising it as an issue. Will let you know what they come back with, but we are now changing our future events so we will not be eating hostel food again. We will either prepare our own, or arrange to eat at a nearby pub from now on.

Thanks Kevin and Yen for leading us throughout the weekend. It was a long hike just to get a glimpse of Sellafield! And thanks to everyone in the group: everyone was interesting with a different story to tell.

    • PodgyRobin

Hahaha. trust me, I've tried a lot of fusion cooking and often it doesn't work, but this combo tastes delicious! It is a beef scotch egg from a Japanese chain called Tsuru :)

Hi Cindy, real shame you had to change. We aren't doing this again in the near future but have another equally exciting trip planned for the first weekend in August up Helvellyn. Have a look at the pictures we took doing this route last week on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.c...

Hi Yen Yau, I still haven't received an email from you and worried I'm not confirmed on this trip. I have paid Shiva the deposit. Can you confirm - I've bought my train ticket too, eek.

Hi Anna, really glad to hear you are coming as we have sent you lots of messages via meetup. Can you send us a personal email address, so we can contact you, as obviously the meetup messages are going astray. Please email me directly at [masked]. We will then send details to you.

oh right, thanks. I'll get the tickets now.

    Hello Kaye
I got a cancellation place today, I was just about to buy my train tickets but wanted to check first if you had decided to drive? Could you let me know, and if you are driving, if you still have a space?
    Thanks, Tracy

    May 22

    • Yen Y.

Hi Tracy, it's Kaye's place that you are taking as she is unable to go. Looks like everyone is getting the train.

      May 22

  • Kaye

hi, has everyone booked their tickets - I'm a late joiner and will either drive (west London) or catch the train. Are most people taking the 1630 train?

    May 19

    • Griff

      Hi Kaye

Let me know if your still thinking about driving there, bit late buying a train ticket myself so would be interested in car pooling.

      Cheers

      May 22

    • Yen Y.

Hi Griff, Kaye unfortunately can't make it now due to work. She probably won't see this comment as she changed her RSVP. Yen

      May 22

  • PodgyRobin

    Hi all,
I just checked trainline.com and the cost of an open return ticket from Euston to Oxenholme is £94.50.
Same price as two single tickets.

    May 19

    • Yen Y.

Hi Robin, I'm sure it was less than that when I checked it last, but that was probably the advance 12 week fare. If you haven't booked it, might be worth giving Kaye who has just RSVPed today, who might drive if she can get people, or take the train. you can message her via the RSVP list on the right. Yen

    Hi,
We now have one place left for this weekend and because of the room sizes and the mix of guys and girls, it would work out best if the final place went to a guy. So guys get signing up to grab the last place, and sorry girls.

    April 19

  • Thalia F.

Hi Kevin, when do we need to pay you the rest of weekend fee?

Am also wondering if the train tickets are included in the £145?

    April 14

    • Yen Y.

Hi Thalia, the balance is due one month before the meetup date, so everyone will get an email towards the end of May. And no, train tickets are not included in the cost. Yen

      April 14

  • Maz

    Hi Kevin,
just please let me know more about collection from Oxenholme station: you have mentioned that you collect at 19:21 and 21:08. so is it that you come by a car at those times take people who are there and go and then later come and at 21:08 collect the second group?

    April 8

    • Kevin

Hi Norma, yes that's right, we will do collections at these times if people need them. It's about a 25 minute run from Oxenholme, to Langdale, so that gives us time to get there and back.

      April 10

  • Yen Y.

Hi Deb, we have booked rooms at the hostel based on a safe number for the walk so unfortunately it's not possible this time. Meals are also included within the hostel package. We do have a room for 5 so if you have a group of 5 friends we could probably put you together.

We are also running a series of day walks through May and June which you are welcome to join and they include Scafell Pike from the Langdales on Sat 31st May. It would be great to have you along for any of these and you could then book your own accommodation. Website address for booking and more details are:
    www.mountainhikes.co.uk

    • Deb

Ok thanks for letting us know. I'll have a word with the others and see what they want to do. Looks a great weekend.

      March 30

  • Deb

Hi, there are a couple of us that would really love to join you on this weekend which looks great but note that there are no single rooms. We therefore wondered if it would be possible to sleep at a B&B close-by rather than at the hostel (we realise that we would need to make our own arrangements in terms of accommodation). We would love to join-in with everything else including meals etc (& of course pay accordingly including organising fees etc).

    March 30

  • Maz

    Hi Kevin,
when is the good time to buy the virgin tickets with lowest cost? is it this week or when?

    March 25, 2014

    • Kevin

Hi Norma, getting the best price for tickets is a bit of art, however the cheapest tickets are usually available from 12 weeks before you go, so yes about now. This is the best advice I have found on how to get the best price, from money saving expert : http://www.moneysavin...

      March 25, 2014

  • Alice

I've never done hill walking & wonder if I'm fit enough. What do you reckon?

    March 25, 2014

    • Kevin

This will be a long day for someone with no hillwalking experience, so it might not be suitable. That's one reason we added another weekend in the lakes for the May Bank Holiday as this one will be more suitable for people new to the lakes without a lot of hillwalking experience. It would be great to have you along for that one.

  • Natalija G.

    Hi Kevin, Yen
Am I correct in thinking that it is OK to travel on a later train? I was thinking of getting either the 5.30 or 5.43 pm.
    Thanks,
    Natalija

That's great, thanks! 6.30 it is then

      March 17, 2014

    • Yen Y.

Great, please RSVP to confirm your place

      March 18, 2014

  • Maz

Hi Kevin. Aren't we all meeting at 4 pm at Euston on 20th to travel all together and make use of group savers?

    February 24, 2014

    • Yen Y.

Hi Norma, unfortunately virgin trains do not offer group saver for this journey. However they do publish cheap advance tickets 12 weeks before travel, so advisable to book in advance. Hope that helps

      February 25, 2014

  • Cara

Fab idea - if I'm not out of the country (and tix arent booked up) I'll try to make it!
