Walk the Devil's Punch Bowl

This Delightful circular walk takes us from Haslemere through a varied mix of woods and heath lands along Polecat valley to and into the picturesque "Devils punchbowl" a designated  area of outstanding natural beauty, a steep sided large heather filled basin formed naturally by the action of many springs and a trickling stream, surrounded by woodland and heathland.

Meeting point underneath the main clock. We will be taking the 09.30 train from London Waterloo arriving in Haslemere 10.22 journey time 52 mins. Due back in London 20.00

Cost £13.65 train fare based on three people travelling together (click here) £6 organiser total £19.65 due back in London 19.30

Difficulty, moderate 22km 14m mainly on good paths but some narrow rocky trails with some steep hills.

What to bring, (click here)

Leaving Haslemere the trail joins the Greensand Way and descends into Ploecat Valley, we follow the valley floor then climb up to Hindhead Comon to traverse the west side of the Puchbowl.

The ridge descends to a spring at Highcombe bottom, from here we walk to the village of Thursley which according to local legend was a place where the Norse God Thor worshipped.

From Thursley a gradual ascent leads us to Gibbert hill a, view point with far reaching Views across the Weald and the second highest point in Surrey. The hill has a gruesome past a Celtic Cross was erected to dispel the fears of local residents about evil spirits.

Following the main ridge of the downs we gradually descend back to Haselmere where you are welcome to join us for drinks and something to eat or take the train home.
