Message from GOOD:

It's the GOOD Cities Issue Meetup! On Wednesday, June 1, GOOD is inviting people everywhere to come together face-to-face to discuss the latest issue of our quarterly magazine, the Cities Issue Starring Los Angeles. http://www.good.is/the-la-issue/

Meetup with other GOOD readers in your neighborhood to share coffee and conversation. Use this space to figure out the where/how/etc. If you help out by taking the lead as an organizer, we'll send you the latest issue!

What to talk about? The focus of our latest issue is looking at the urban environment through the lens of Los Angeles. Maybe you'll discuss one of the articles about water, traffic, or education. Maybe you'll talk about other problems you're facing in your own community. What can you learn from L.A.? What does your city do better? We're excited to see what you come up with, as long as you're using the issue as a jumping off point for great conversations about the future of where you live.

Send in photos from your Meetup to alissa[at]goodinc[dot]com and we'll run a roundup of the events on GOOD.is!

For everything you need to know about planning or attending a GOOD Cities Meetup, head here: http://www.good.is/post/announcing-the-good-cities-issue-...

After meeting at Libros Schmibros, we'll go just a few blocks away to Serenata de Garabaldi around 8:45 to continue the conversation over amazing Mexican food. Then, if we want to keep the party going even longer, we can head across the street to Eastside Luv for more drinks and live music.

I agree 110%. I really hate the negative views outsiders have of our amazing city... :/

Hey folks! In lieu of the conversations we had the last few months, I thought you'd might be interested in traveling south of the border to Mexico City for a sustainable urban planning tour. Hoy Community, a local non-profit in Mexico City is putting together a tour in Sept. and there are still spots left to join. Its relatively cheap and should be lots of fun! Details here: http://www.facebook.com/eve... and http://www.idealist.org/vie...

Sorry! One more message! Many of you expressed interest in riding the bus and also in Out the Window, a series of videos screening on transit TV. This weekend there are two big bus-riding outings to see the videos. All details here! http://www.publicmattersgro...

Hello GoodLA meetup members. It was a pleasure meeting you all at the Libros Schmibros. Thanks to the Good staff and David Kipen for hosting a stimulating and fun get together. A friend tweeted this article today at the Harvard Biz Review about revitalizing cities (http://bit.ly/hfjol0). It's part of a 3-week discussion there on the re-invention of the social infrastructure of cities. Very much on our topic and some interesting ideas here.

Yeah, that was a great event and conversation guys. It was awesome to see the turnout. I was totally excited by that Neighborhood Swap idea. Here were a few other notes and ideas i jotted down while i was there, for whatever its worth:
Ambassadors and greeters at the airport.
Taking over the starline buses and setting up alternative walking tours.
Sister neighborhoods. At opp ends of transit lines.
How do we unite LA? LA as part of a united California. The California olympics?

      Also:

Street being converted into a park like Ciclavia ? new common ground defined with no new prejudices. Add value to the street.

Transportation as common ground of the city. Need unified vision of what we're talking about. Need lots of small disparate actions. Both, not either or.
      Build connective tissue of/through culture.

That's it. But totally interesting stuff i'm still mulling over in my head.

If you're interested in Community sharing/swapping, one place you can join is NeighborGoods: http://neighborgoods.net/ You can borrow and lend things to your neighbors. I've done it, and people do return what they borrow, and sometimes they even throw in a bottle of wine as a thank you. The other place where you can participate is in neighborhood Time Banks. Echo Park has one: http://www.echoparktimebank... and I'm sure there are others in L.A.

A billboard campaign would be ideal. I know GOOD has had design competitions in the past...perhaps a similar crowd-sourcing call for ideas?

Thanks to Good and David Kipen for hosting last night. A really inspiring conversation! Since there was so much interest in the bus as venue for connectivity, allow me to shamelessly promote a project to put video art on the bus that my organization Freewaves is launching the week of June 13-19: "Out the Window" Brings Art to LA Buses http://www.laweekly.com/201...

We were actually talking last night about organizing a bus tour the weekend of the 18th/19th to see the videos. Anyone want to take the lead on that and create a new meetup?

Thanks to everyone for coming, and a huge thanks to Jackie Salazar (yay!) who helped coordinate the dinner at La Serenata. If you have any photos or additional thoughts, please send them to Alissa at the email above. And see you all on June 30, be sure to RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/GOOD/...

Remember, you can take the Gold Line to the Soto station and walk a few blocks to Libros Schmibros. Some people have asked about bike parking, and there are a few racks on the street, plus there may be some at the Metro stop, too. See you tonight!
