Significant Decisions: One Japanese Woman’s Story of Business Success

Kiyoko Toyama had been one of the only female presidents in the multi-billion dollar American switch industry and one of few female presidents of a Japan-based company. In that position, Toyama has proven to employees, NKK Switches’ parent company and the technology field that she is an influential leader with the vision and business savvy to expand NKK Switches in the components industry. A native of Kyoto, Japan, Toyama moved to the United States in 1970 and earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Toyama quickly discovered that her bi-lingual, bi-cultural background and intuitive management skills would prove advantageous in her career in the technology industry. She also has been active in volunteering her time mentoring students at Paradise Valley School Districts as well as coaching young adults to obtai n GED at UMOM New Day Center.
