According to Hiking Upward "The Signal Knob hike, in the George Washington National Forest, boasts some of the best vistas we have seen in Northern Virginia. Situated 8 miles west of Front Royal, it takes approximately 1.5 hrs to get there from the metro Washington area." This is a Difficulty Level 4 (out of 5) hike with Level 5 views. But the best part is that we will be taking in the views at night. You read that right! The full moon is one day earlier on June 13th but we will have more than enough moonlight for our hike. We will start in daylight and time it so we arrive at the Signal Knob overlook at night. Below us will be the town of Strasburg lit up in all its glory. Then we will pass several additional overlooks over the last 3 miles. This is a loop hike.

Above - Signal Knob. Photo taken in Dec 2013. We will hike to the tower and see the town of Strasburg below us at night.
Above - The largest of several stream crossings. Photo taken in Dec 2013. A set of poles for balance helps. I will scout the hike in advance to be sure this stream can be crossed. If water level is an issue then we will hike a 9-mile out and back instead of doing the loop. Either way, the views will be great!
Our carpool location will be the Centerville Park & Ride at 4:00 PM. The hike will begin at 5:30 PM. Depending upon fitness of the group this hike will take approximately 5-6 hours. Afterwards, everyone is invited to the Lucky Star Lounge in Front Royal. This is an English-style pub with great food and microbrews and one of my favorite pubs in the region.
