Inaugural meeting!

UPDATE:  I have changed the meeting time because I am being sent to Tulsa that week on business.  (I promise this is rare!  It is very unfortunate that I cannot make that time.)

No book club would be fun if one person ran everything. Let's meet up and talk about possible future book selections, how often we should meet, and what kind of atmosphere we want. I would like to pick the first book for our first book discussions, but I would also like input. I have listed three book possibilities below.  During our meeting we can decide as a group which one to start with! (I appreciate if you love popular fiction, but I would prefer not to choose those kinds of books for discussion.)

Book Choices:

Americanah by Chimamandah Ngozi Adichie (recent winner of the National Book Critics Circle award)

Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon (Author's previous novel won the Pulitzer Prize)

We are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler (Recent winner of the Pen/Faulkner award)

I'm behind here. Has it been decided when the next meeting is or what the next book is?

I had a great time at the inaugural meeting and I've already started devouring our first book!

So bummed, but I'm not going to be able to make it after all. Online microbiology class final exam due by midnight, and I'm no where near finished like I thought I would be! I read the summaries of the three books you suggested, and they all sound great! I will read whatever the group decides. If I must vote, I think Americanah might be my first choice. Any week night is best for a meeting time for me. Weekends aren't as easy to get away (family time) plus we travel many weekends. I live in Middletown, and I'm open to sharing my home for a meeting as well if that helps. Looking forward to hearing how it goes tonight!

Not sure I can make the meeting tonight so sorry really looking forward to this group. If comments count I vote Americanah as the 1st book. As far as meeting dates no real ideas there as I think it is always difficult- maybe Tuesdays or Thursdays but I know week nights can be difficult for people with wee ones. I have more flexibility so most nights work for me.

Sorry to miss tonight. Somehow when the date got changed my brain never registered that it was the same night my folks were coming in and i promised them lasagna. I thought all the book selections sounded great; can't wait to see what gets picked and catch up with you all next month!

I regretfully can't make the meeting. For what it's worth We are All Completely Beside Ourselves is my top choice. Best of luck on the first meeting!

I'm interested, but Wednesday evenings are not good for me. Will these always be on Wednesday evening?

I have had a lot of feedback about meeting days. I just picked a random day but I want to find a day that works well for everyone. We might do weekends or pick the weeknight that works best.

That would be awesome. I'm pretty flexible other than Wednesdays. Looking forward to being able to attend in the future.

Wish I could make it tomorrow- same as many on here, my work schedule shifted a bit, I'm very sorry! I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes!

Will these always be on Wednesdays? Wednesdays are the one night a week I can't go. (I am visually impaired and therefore transportation is always an issue.) If I can swing it, I'd love to come.

I am hearing that Wednesday is no good for lots of people. I think we will have weekend options from now on.

Hi Heather, thank you for starting this up! It sounds like a great way to meet new folks here in Louisville. Just a quick question- is it alright if I come a little late for the first meeting? I have to work till 7:30 but I'm super interested in joining. Again, thanks for this and I'm excited to meet everyone!

Sure no problem! I actually feel like there will be a lot of people there on our first meeting so it might take thirty minutes just to secure tables.

I can't come this day, but am looking forward to hearing when the next meeting will be and which books to read!

I am good meeting whenever; my husband and housemate can watch our kiddos when i have another calling. (many continuous thanks for that!) I haven't read any of these authors, but these selections all sound great. Looking forward to meeting you all on Wednesday!

I'm so excited I found this group! I've been hovering around Meetup off and on, but have been too intimidated to try anything lately after a failed attempt or two in the past. Maybe joining a brand new group is the way to go, rather than trying to squeeze into a group of 500+. I live very close so I will be there!

I just finished "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon. It surprised me at many turns and was an engrossing and thought provoking read.
I also just finished "A White Wind Blew" by James Markert. This one delivered unexpected content, and was extremely well written and well researched. James Markert, a graduate of the U of L with a major in history who is a tennis pro and coach, has written a heart breaking and historically accurate tale of the Waverly Hills TB Sanatorium in Louisville. Have you read it yet?

Hello Heather, can u schedule a meeting on a wk end??? Perhaps sometime in the afternoon??? Like maybe sometime afer 12 noon:) That time would work well for me since I work two jobs every day of the wk. in the afternoon, I will be more refreshed for a book discussion:)

      April 1

    • Heather

I will keep your request in mind if you are not able to make it to our inaugural meeting to talk about scheduling. I prefer weekends as well, but I want to make sure that I know what the best times are for the group as a whole.

Oh wait. This is a book club. I was searching writing critique groups and this came up. My apologies.

Hello! I'm new to Louisville and looking for critiques of my attempt at a novel. Hope to meet everyone and read other work.

Hi, I'm up for a new book club but wonder if this club might limit itself to books available from the library? My slender budget precludes purchasing new books.

    March 30

    • Heather

That is a good suggestion and I think it is very do-able.
