Phase 2 - Intensive Playtesting at Harvard Square

  • Mar 10, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is an ad hoc meetup reserved for PHASE 2 -GMG Intensive Playtesting. Games that have been nominated by sufficient members will be invited to this meetup and guild members will be asked to familiarize themselves with the game and then attempt to "break" the game by exploiting holes in the rules, testing unorthodox play strategies, and pressing mechanics to their limit. The following games have been invited to participate in this meetup:

Castles of Caragaba by David Wilkinson

HOHOHO! The Christmas Card Game by Jeremy Burnham

Los Cthuluchadores by Bob Kelly

If a game designer has requested specific members to playtest their game, I will reach out to those members directly and invite them to play that specific game. We invite other members of the Guild to attend and, in the event that we don't have sufficient playtesters, to participate. Space is limited, though, so there is a cap on the number of attendees. Likewise, we will not be playtesting anything other than these three games (i.e., if your game isn't listed above, please don't bring it to the event).

NOTE 1: Due to unforeseen conflicts, Jeremy will be playtesting HOHOHO! at his house. Playtesters for his game have already been notified (you know who you are).

NOTE 2: It is very likely we will be adding Royal Strawberries to tonight's playtesting docket.

I very much enjoyed the intensive playtesting feedback, though I regret not being able to get started at 6:30. Also, we had some other complications that led to the game getting played less than we would have liked (primarily due to variants that we were experimenting with). The result was that we received lots of helpufl feedback on the 2-player variants (which will affect the core game), but not enough feedback on the standard game). We'll definitely have to schedule this one again (once others have had a chance to get their intensive feedback) and see about playing 3-4 full games in succession.

I should also add that we had really great playtesters--so thanks to Dina, Raj, Harry, Steve, and Rory for participating!

I am glad I was able to playtest Royal Strawberries and give some feedback to Justin. It was fun both playing the game and exchanging ideas about game design.

I made a huge amount of progress on my game in the 3-4 hours of play testing. There is nothing like having several people play your game 6-7 times in one sitting providing informed and novel feedback. It is difficult to get the same level of critique when someone has only played it only once. We had enough time to tweak the rules several times and test the new rules. I will be incorporating several rule tweaks that were suggested last night. I highly recommend attending one of these either as a game developer or play tester. I'll be personally more than happy to pay the time back to some other designer and help them in an intensive play test session. Thanks to all that organized this event. Please keep it going!

This is a great new addition to the GMG - having a block of 3-4 hours to playtest specific games seems to be immensely helpful to the designer.

I was enjoying the playtesting and the game has a lot of potentail in becoming popular. I hope I was helpful, though I had to leave early.

I, unfortunately, will not be able to attend. I will be learning how to use laser cutters at Danger!Awesome.

How about scheduling a quick Google Hangout/Skype call in the upcoming week to work this out?

Yes, I am available any evening through Thursday.

I like the title of the game, too - Royal Strawberries.

I think we talked about this earlier - but I think we should devise an online nomination form.

Another reason for the delay in this is that we wanted to do pen and paper prototyping first :)
