Oculus Rift: Who, What, When, Where, Why and a little bit of How!

The August meetup will be the follow up to my previous talk on the Oculus Rift. We will cover quite a range of topics to do with the rift. We will examine what does and does not work with the Rift and how to minimize the barrier of entry caused by motion sickness. We will also cover how to add basic support to a unity project and as always a healthy amount of speculation on where the Rift is heading.

Good background info covering a wide range of considerations - and not a sales spiel. And some generous enthusiasts brough their Rifts in for people to try out.

Thanks Phil for the excellent talk today. It's exciting to think about the rift and where we might be in the next few years.

Thanks also to Greg and Ben who also bought their rifts.

I have a DL a 12 GB torrent of all available demos as of 2 weeks back. I'm working through the dross trying to nail which ones are best. Those with rifts might want to meet a little earlier to sort which demos to use, if we have three on hand we could have one each with ABC cups to cut down on time lost swapping lenses. Great to see the luna lander gaining a fair bit of cred in the oculus community.

I have the Tuscany demo, and Team Fortress 2 - haven't had much time to play with it more than that yet. I have heard good (and bad) things about the guilotine demo. I think an issue we may have is the differing IPDs of everyone there, the cups themselves are not too difficult to change, and I am not sure that we will need one rift dedicated to each cup type. Maybe run the different demos on each rift, and change cups as necessary?

Hi all, I am thinking I should come along to this. I have a Rift, and am willing to bring it. What else needs to be brought along?

anyone know of a cheap video splitter can buy locally that will work with the rift? Not sure if there are monitors there at the venue, but would be really nice to be able to see what's happening on a couple of the rifts.

Did someone buy one of the dev kits for it? What mean is, Is this just a discussion about it or does someone have one? Either way I still might attend.

    July 26, 2013

    • Ashley D.

There'll be 1, possibly 2 dev kits on the day.

Hi everyone. I'm trying to start a Game Jam here is Brisbane and I was wondering if any members would be interested in participating? Perhaps I could squeeze in a short segment at the next meetup?

    July 25, 2013

Anyone is welcome to announce news or start discussions as long as it doesn't impinge on the main presenter.

still waiting for mine to arrive but I have seen a unit in action very exciting stuff

That would be great Ben if you don't mind as I am sure there are more than a few demos worth checking out and swapping lenses really slows down the process.

I have seen a few people have been using javascript and webGL for their oculus projects. So far I have pretty much stuck to Unity as it is dead simple to get started with but I think I may have to have a play with this one.
