Game Dev Art & Tech: April Fools Day Meetup

  • April 1, 2014 · 7:00 PM

On April Fools Day come meet game developers and other artists at this first meet up of Game Dev Art & Tech. (It'll be after 12 noon so we're not fooling)

If you have a game to demo, an art portfolio to show, or anything else arty or techy that you're working on, please bring it along and let everyone see. If you contact the organizer (me, Simon Amarasingham) in advance and supply an image of your work (e.g. a screen shot) it'll get posted here

Thanks in advance to RN74 for not only providing space but being super responsive!

Scrrrolllll down (yes, all the way!) to see games that will be on display at the event:

Bit Gym brings interactive trails from around the world to your cardio machine - make sure to ask Alex for a demo.

Electropocalypse is a puzzle game about electricity. You play Nick, trying to save the world from some bizarre quantum-probability mishap, fixing one circuit at a time.

Undead Overlord - the world's tastiest Zombie Dominion RTS

Quadradius has been affectionately called "3D space checkers on crack" but we like to consider it the perfect intersection between a typical strategy board game and a fun multiplayer video game where luck and strategy work hand-in-hand.

Evil Master Overlord is a defense strategy game with a unique combination of dungeon/tower defense and puzzle mechanics and a tongue-in-cheek style of humor.

Dungeon Colony is a 2D fantasy real-time strategy game in which you take control over a Dungeon Lord and his loyal Minions: Dig out tunnels and rooms, craft items from collected resources, and set up traps to protect your treasures against greedy heroes.

Max's Adventure is an interactive choose your own adventure, story book.

Squirrel Wars is an easy to pick up real time strategy... with squirrels. Defend your territory and launch decisive attacks against the enemy's base.  Coming soon to iOS and/or your nearest neighborhood park.

Open Field Echo SounderOutdoor audio game app will randomly set six GPS located targets that you must find with simulated echolocation.

Ruby On Ice is  a one touch action puzzle with unlimited levels

Just like humans evolved from fish, Go Extinct! evolved from Go Fish! Play with evolutionary trees and natural history in this social, competitive, and strategy-rich card game.

The Grammar Spammer: A fast-paced mobile learning game that leverages Instagram & Wikipedia to introduce language fundamentals to kids & ESL students.

TAO - videogame controller/exerciser where your muscle strength controls your avatar.  “BEST of CES 2014” nominee with glowing reviews from Mashable, The Verge, The Daily Beast, engadget, Tech Hive, Crave and many others.  TAO in Prototype phase with Kickstarter campaign.

Essential Guide To Game Audio - a companion iOS app to go along with the book of the same name

dSonic - we create audio for games and will show a few of the mobile games we've worked on

Stryker - A 'First Person Football' soccer game for mobile featuring intuitive touch controls and precise shooting.  Currently better played than seen!

Spaced Out! is an action arcade shooter where you battle your friends in frenetic real time combat to determine who’s the best saucer jockey in the galaxy!

Great event and thanks to Simon for putting it together!

I'm looking for a Unity3D engineer to collaborate with me on the soccer game I demoed the other night. It will be released for mobile (iPad, iPhone, maybe Android) in 2 months ready for the World Cup. Shoot me an email via meetup if you might be interested!

Thanks for organizing Simon! It was great to see everyone enjoy the Sumo game using TAO. Please visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/814592424/tao-turn-downtime-into-exercise-timetm and also see video game legend & Guitar Hero founder, Charles Huang, voice his support for TAO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpK-gTqj0nA&feature=youtu.be Thanks again everyone for braving the rain and checking us out.

Thanks for bringing TAO, Philo! It's amazing what a workout it was using that device to play the sumo wrestler game :)

I wanted to say that I really had a lot of fun. A lot of talented people showed off their stuff and I am glad to have attended. I think the highlights of the show (for me, at least) were definitely Hero, Go Extinct, the sumo wrestling exercise game, and the soccer demo.

I definitely hope to show off my own game at the next event. :-)

With that said, I hate to trouble people, but would you be willing to take my survey? It should take 5-10 minutes.

It is for my undergraduate thesis and it is intended to improve games academic programs at liberal arts universities. I will pass out the URL later, too. If anyone wants the results of my research, I am happy to pass it along when I am done. Thanks!

Hey all - sorry to miss all the cool games tonight, and miss out on showing Undead Overlord. My team and I got caught up in a last minute quest to post a goofy video for April Fools that is just now finally coming to fruition. Hopefully, there will be more of these meet-ups, and I'll get another chance to show off our lovingly crafted zombie gore-fest for you all.

In the meantime, if you're curious what took us all day and into the evening to come up with, here's the link for the goofy video we made today:

(please do not view this if you're allergic to goats)

Simon - thanks for organizing, and hope to see you at the next one!

Ah, sorry to hear it, David. Well, I still hope we'll get the Council of Overlords together sometime soon. :-)

Thanks everyone testing out our games. Great networking event as I haven't met many of you before. Apologies if I wasn't able to answer your questions or show you the game. But contact me if you'd like to try the early-access version of Dungeon Colony so I can email you a key. Thank you Simon for putting this together.

Great evening Simon. A wide diversity of indie game projects, artists with portfolios and networking in a very supportive environment. Attendance was amazing, despite last night's storm. Wonderful seeing friends and meeting new ones. Looking forward to the next one!

Totally missed the signup to list our game. Somehow I totally forgot about this. But either way, I thought I'd list our game in here:

    Game:
    Paper Ace!
We've developed this game that was shown off at GDC in the expo hall this year, called Paper Ace (at Matterport's booth where we were sharing)!
It's a game where the user flies through our 3D scanned house in a paper airplane, smashing through bricks (lego) buildings and activating fun animations scattered throughout the home (like blasting fire from a stove-top or making pictures come to life).

Here's a link to a beta demo of the game, playable on the web:

Will this meetup be open to the public or only for those who have RSVPed?

    March 31, 2014

    • Simon A.

It's pretty much open...although it'd be great to have people RSVP so we get an idea of numbers

      March 31, 2014

  • Jason M.

What is the format of the demos? Do we present to the whole group sequentially or is it more of a mingle and go see everyones work?

Either way I'd love to show my sports game in the making... a soccer game for mobile using a flick to kick mechanic. It's a work-in-progress graphics wise but has some cool elements to show.

    March 28, 2014

    • Simon A.

Hi Jason - it's the mingle-and-go-see-everyone's-work format, and it'd be great to have your soccer game in the mix

      March 28, 2014

  • Joyce Y.

which platform are these games on?

    1 · March 25, 2014

    • David M.

We're using Unity, so any platform is possible. That said, we're focusing on mobile first, then desktop.

      1 · March 25, 2014

    • Simon A.

I believe the games are mostly mobile or PC...I don't think any are console titles

      March 25, 2014

  • Cricket

This is going to be so freaking awesome. I LOVE indie games!

    2 · March 23, 2014

  • Cameron P.

Wow - 3/6 games so far are about being the evil controller of minions. What are the odds of that?

I betcha ours is the goriest of that lot . . . ;-)

    2 · March 11, 2014

    • Simon A.

Yeah I also thought that the percentage of evil dungeon master games was higher than you'd expect :) ...and all 3 games are really different from each other.

      1 · March 11, 2014

  • Winston W.

In Electropocalypse, you are the evil overlord of batteries and light bulbs. So that's 4/6.

    2 · March 11, 2014

  • Alexander S.

Since we all love games here, just wanted to ask if somebody wants to come and have some fun at Game Developers Conference with us. We are going to launch our platform in mid March at GDC and I'll be happy to meet someone here to join our promotional staff. You'll get a free pass for GDC worth $200 and there is also $100 per day for you. We want to make fun of the concept of half-dressed booth babes to get some attention of media at GDC. We'll have a couple of guys with beards to wear "booth babe" T-shirts and distribute promotional items. Please contact me and tell your bearded friends.

    March 2, 2014

    • Ben

I was wondering why I was growing this beard.

      March 7, 2014

  • Winston W.

I'll show my puzzle game about electricity.
