Games in the pub (Scrabble in disguise)

  • This location is shown only to members

Come join us for another round of fun with Games in the Pub. The theme games for this event will be variations of the humble Scrabble game - Take 2 and Up Words. Game play will be run through on the day however the rules can also be found below.

If anyone has a copy of Up Words or Scrabble which you are willing to bring along then please feel free to.

Where to meet?
A booking has been made at the pub for 3pm. The tables will be at the back of the pub with 'reserved' signs.

Lucky door prize

As I completely and utterly failed last time, thus forgetting to do the lucky door prize (sorry) we will take 2... The lucky door prize will be a $10 voucher for The Games Capital. It is free to enter, just come pester me for a ticket.

Rules of play

  • Take 2 - also known as Speed Scrabble, is a fast-paced, non-turn-based Scrabble variant played without a board. Tiles are placed face-down in the middle of the table in a communal pool and each player is given 7 face-up starting tiles. From their starting tiles, each player tries to build their own valid Scrabble grid - players do not use each other's grid or tiles. When a player successfully uses all of their face-up tiles, they shout "take two" and every player takes two more tiles. Play continues until there are no more tiles left to draw.
  • Up Words - follows the same rules of scrabble however each player is able to build on top of existing words. For example, an A can be placed on top of the O in cot to create the word cat.

Hi everyone, I have had something come up which cannot be changed. I will still rock up but will be late - lookout for our regular Simon who will be running the show 'til I get there. Thanks.

Alright fellow Nostalgics, what shall we play this time? There has been a suggestion for the game Taboo (pairs must guess each others word as written on their card without using the word itself or five additional words listed on the card, which are all taboo) and for monopoly. What does everyone else think or would like play?

There is a quick fun game called Take 2 that only requires a scrabble set (just the tiles). Essentially each player starts with 7 tiles and they have to create their own grid of words using the tiles, once they have used all 7 they call out 'Take 2' and everyone has to take two extra tiles. This continues to all the tiles are used and someone has used all their tiles to create words in a grid.

Very interesting. Scrabble variations, so to speak, sounds like a possible plan.
