Schlow Saturday: Public Boardgaming Meetup (All Ages)

Members have expressed interest in having monthly public gatherings that:

• Allow members to meet one another before committing to meetups at private residences

• Allow for "all ages" events to happen on a regular basis for those who may not want to game when there's alcohol, adult table talk, or adult-themed games present

• Allow us to demo games in a public setting and, perhaps, promote the group publicly to draw more membership

I've been working with the Schlow Library to secure a couple of Saturdays over the next two months and currently have September 21 established as our first monthly public meetup event for this group.

The room holds 30 people and the library provides tables, chairs, and a small kitchenette to prepare light snacks. All you will need to bring is yourself, any game you want to play, people you feel would enjoy open gaming, and a pleasant and open attitude.

I am certainly open to demo'ing one of the following games at a table that day:
- Eclipse
- Power Grid
- Mage Knight
- Dune
- Arkham Horror

If you have a game you would prefer to have demo'd on this day, please use the comments section below and we can look for someone who owns it and is willing to demo it in the group.

I am setting the RSVP limit to 35 at this time to make sure we don't overwhelm the space and to gauge the level of interest. If we have enough positive support for this in the next week, then I will finalize the September date with the library, post the October meetup, and then secure it as things progress.

What is meant by "All Ages"?

"All Ages," in this context, implies that:

1. There will not be alcohol or other age-restricted items present (obvious in this case given the venue)

2. Adult language and 'trash talking' will be kept to a PG-13 level or below

3. Adult-themed games will not be allowed (think 'Cards Against Humanity')

4. 'Your mom' jokes are still welcome and will be appropriately snickered at

(If anyone has anything to add to this list, please state as much in the comments)

EDIT: Raising the limit to 40 due to the fact we're reserved in both rooms

Question as I am from out of town (DuBois). I notice there is a football game this day. Anything I should know about traffic/parking. I can come in on 80 or take back roads if you'll have a suggestion.

Jennifer, I'm going to send you a set of directions via email that will have you avoiding College Ave and trying to avoid exiting off of I-99 to get into downtown State College. It's a bit of a runaround to swing south around downtown and then swing back up to the library through the backside of Atherton (which should be less trafficked). Alternatively, you can take the traditional Atherton exit off of I-99 and plan for the slog that Athterton becomes on game day.

For those of you that just RSVP'd in the last day or so, I've sent you the 'planning' email that outlines the schedule and table setup for the day. Worth reading before tomorrow if you have the opportunity.

I'm planning to bring my husband and our two kids at 11:00. My daughter needs to leave for ballet around noon, but we'd at least like the chance to meet people! (Hi, Joana!)

Hi Amanda! So glad to see you on the meet-up! Does your daughter have ballet 12:30-2:30? Olivia might have to miss ballet Saturday unfortunately. What games are you most interested in?

      September 17, 2013

    • Amanda V.

Yes, ballet from 12:30-2:30. If it helps, we could take Olivia to ballet, but we won't be able to pick her up since we have to go someplace else at 2:30 (busy day!).

Being there with kids, we're interested in stuff that's more appropriate for tweens as far as time and attention. They like 7 Wonders, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Pandemic, and of course Munchkin. We'll bring some stuff, too. We know Andrea and her kids (see comment below) and hopefully the kids can find stuff to play together.

Lovely! I know we have many RPG'ers in the group that might appreciate something like that - can see if any of them pipe up here or if you can drum up a game next Saturday - certainly plenty of room for it.

I'd be willing to teach/play Pandemic. That's a nice entry level game and it plays quick.

I'll be bringing my favorite game: Sentinels of the Multiverse. It's a co-op card game where everyone gets to play as superheroes.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
