Gangplank RVA: Website Basics - Domains, Hosting, and Content Management

Want to build a website for your own project, but don't know where to start? Want to help with Gangplank's website?

With this workshop we'll layout the basic steps beginning with the domain registration and everything that follows. This is more about the functional "how-to" and not about the layout design, however we will discuss some design elements when they pertain to function.

This is a brown bag lunch workshop, so please bring a lunch or snack if you like. No computers necessary. The presentation will be in PowerPoint, and the slides will be made available afterwards.

See you on Thursday!

It was great meeting everyone and learning more about gangplank. Ben did a great job presenting the material. In the anticipation that a future workshop will cover wordpress more in detail, I wanted to remind everyone that I would be willing to give you a "sandbox" install of wordpress as a subdomain of my site to allow you to learn and experiment on your own without worrying about affecting a live site. Just email me at [masked] and i will set you up. Looking forward to more workshops as my schedule allows.

Thanks to everyone who assisted in this informative session. I hope more Wordpress workshops are available. Hope to covert my websites over to this format.

This was a good introduction to the process of setting up a domain and web page.

Ben did an excellent job of walking everyone through the basics of domain name registration, WordPress hosting, theme selection, content updates, and other benefits of using WordPress for website development. I would definitely attend future WordPress workshops. I have a good amount of WordPress experience, but have found that the collaborative environment that workshops provide, allows for interacting with other WP users, and the opportunity to gather new tools, tips, and development techniques.

Thanks to Mark Deutsch for providing everyone with the Gangplank facility for meeting.

The paired, volunteer introductions were an especially good idea for team building. Attendees for the website committee paired off, each giving personal details to the other. Then each introduced their intro partner to the group. So for everyone, there is at least one person who knows them that much better.

I learned so much, it hurt (though it will hurt less in the future). Ben did a great job, and the group interacted well, bringing up lots of good points for getting started with domain registration, hosting, and working with Wordpress.

Great attendance today. Lots of good questions and discussion.

Please comment if you would attend more workshops on how to use WordPress itself. There are several sessions we could have on the various topics of WP site management.

Excellent presentation, Ben. And yes, I would like a followup WordPress specific workshop. Meanwhile I'm going to check out WP and HostGator.

Ben, Thank you for stepping up and sharing your knowledge with the Gangplank RVA community. I know we are looking to learn more from you in the future -- and, I'd like to invite others to "step up" and volunteer to lead a workshop here!

Terrific - we covered a lot with plenty of examples and, as a bonus, a GTP primer. There's a lot of iceberg remaining below the rolling waves.
