DnD Next (v5) Play-Test

We have good interest to run a couple of groups for play-testing the new DnD - DnD "Next", or version 5.

Preference among the current crop of attendees seems to be to run this every other Wednesday.

Please Sign Up at www.DnDNext.com and download the playtest packet.

We'll bring along printouts of pre-generated characters at the party's level, so new folk are able to jump right in.  We're also mixing up the DM from session to session, so we get a mix of both DM-styles and play-experience during the test.

I'm not 100% sure how to invite people yet but i made a google + community page for this group. I find it easier to chat when discussions aren't lost over time.

This is the link to the page, i guess see if there is a "Join Button" or something along the lines. Once I guess Ian or Mark join i'll make them the mod's of the page.

If you guys have no desire for this it's cool took me two seconds to create it, figured it couldn't hurt.

Crap, I keep doing that! Anyway, I started a discussion in the forums on this website regarding D&D Next. The link is at http://www.meetup.com.... Not everybody is on Google+, unfortunately.

    • Ian S

Yes, I'd suggest we keep the discussion under 1 roof unless we really have to use something not available to us here on Meetup.

    Also, the Paladin...

It's definitely okay if you want to level up your current characters to 7 for next time. However, being a playtest, if anyone wants to try a new character now would be a fantastic time to do so.

Being that we've built up a large group I am going to ask/beg/plead for one favor. Everyone's going to have a slew of new spells and maneuvers and everyone will have more fun if you really take some time to study your new characters and know how your stuff works.

If you have any question related to your character please for the love of Olidammara ask before the game. I am at your disposal from now until game night to help you out since we are all still learning this game. As a DM, I am kind of a jerk when it comes to this sort of thing so please help me out with this. No question is too basic I really want to help everyone out.

      Hey Patrick,

      March 18, 2013

    • Mark S.

It looks like the next iteration of the playtest will be out shortly, and it includes the Druid and Ranger. Very apropos of playing in a wilderness setting like the "Isle of Dread". Will you be okay with A. using the next set of rules and B. letting people take the Druid and/or Ranger?

I thought that Dav would take the +1 spear.

The mace is a simple weapon. Even Tando could take it. Rongo is puzzled by the offer of the mace. It looks like a baby rattle in his ham-sized fist. ;-)

If Barok wanted to switch to fighting with two weapons, he could use the hand axe +1 as his off-hand weapon (since it is a light weapon) and the mace +1 as his primary weapon.

    Just some ideas...

    March 15, 2013

    • Ian S

Barok is built mainly around defence - avoidance, damage mitigation etc. I wonder how it would work to have a dual-wielding "off-spec".

      March 15, 2013

  • Tom C

Everyone OK with this??? Gary -only other character that could use the 2nd set of +1 banded. I gave Rongo the mace because he has been in longer than Jarod. Dav is the staff expert so he got the staff striking. I assume we are all leveling up to 7th & not making new characters? Patrick - Do you want me to bring my old Monter Manual & Fiend Folio on the 27th? so we have some monster descriptions that the beastry does not show?

See you all on the 27th

    March 15, 2013

    • Greg M.

Actually the Staff of Striking is Cleric / Wizard / Druid only, and i thought the Cleric got the Mace +1, and I got the Staff. If not the Cleric can have the staff doesn't matter.

      March 15, 2013

    • Patrick B.

Tom - I've got the 3rd and 4th edition books and I've read through the bestiary on the many many monsters that will be joining us, so I'm all good but thank you.

Epilogue part 2 - a week after the cultists were dealt with, the party is still being hailed as heroes. All reports of raiding and looting in the area have stopped. Engineers, sappers and a high level cleric have been requested from the capitol to deal with the rift and hopefully seal up the caves in the ravine for good.

True to his promise, the party has been given property by the local Lord. Unfortunately, the property is south of the river (aka the swamp-like area on the map).

Epilogue - subsequent explorations of the caves show that the Gnolls look like they left in a hurry. Examination of the Gnoll leader's quarters finds a pair of boots of elvenkind hidden under a floor tile.

While the party was dealing with the cultists, a reinforced group of dwarfs searched the owlbear den and dealt with the gray oozes lurking there. Unfortunately, most of their weapons and some of their armor was dissolved by the oozes' acidic attacks. They have since left the adventuring life to take up mining and other less dangerous activities. Another party dealt with the bugbear lair, and freed several prisoners in the process.

When the party returns to the Keep, they notice that all the crows are gone.

    March 15, 2013

  • Tom C

Yup.. My bad. Staff of striking is Cleric, druid, wizard.

    March 15, 2013

  • Tom C

Got to look that up but I always thought the staff of striking was an anybody use weapon??? I will look. OK that puts the+1 spear up for grabs, potion of Heroism up for grabs. We can jockey items if need be.

Hey guys, I've got an situation at work that's going to require me to stay late. How late I can't say, but I am officially a maybe now for tonight. I think I'll be an hour late.

    March 13, 2013

  • Ian S

I may be a little late, have an appointment beforehand

    March 12, 2013

  • Mark S.

FYI - I'm leveling up Rongo the barbarian to 7th level.

    March 9, 2013

    • Patrick B.

      That'll fix that fricking cult.

      March 9, 2013

  • Mark S.

Ian - will you be leveling up your Dwarf Fighter Barok?

    March 9, 2013

  • Mark S.

I'm also leveling up Asheron the wizard, so we have options.

    March 9, 2013

  • Mark S.

Don't forget to check the following documents when leveling up your character:
    Classes
Creating A Character (especially the Character Advancement table on the last page)
    Specialties and Feats
    Maneuvers (only Fighter, Monk, Rogue)

All classes get a new Feat at 3rd and 6th level.
All classes increase 2 ability scores each at 4th and 8th level.

Unlike previous editions, I don't think PC's gain new skills. Additional skills can only be gained by taking certain feats.

Just wondering if you guys would consider doing this on a weekly base. I'm really looking to get into a weekly dedicated group. I know it's play test and we will be jumping all over testing all the new stuff but I would like a set group of people.
