DnD Next (v5) Play-Test

March 2013 update: Group size capped at 6 (5+GM), but if 4 more Wait-list I'll create an ad-hoc 2nd group and reassign players. Please note the group you'll be in - group2 will run near the front of the store. Any questions or feedback, please email me. Ian

 

We have good interest to run a couple of groups for play-testing the new DnD - DnD "Next", or version 5.

Please Sign Up at www.DnDNext.com and download the playtest packet.

We'll bring along printouts of pre-generated characters at the party's level, so new folk are able to jump right in.  We're also mixing up the DM from session to session, so we get a mix of both DM-styles and play-experience during the test.

    I will be there Wednesday also....early. Been overly busy & in desperate need of a distraction for a few hours. Have not even had the chance to read any of the obsure rules. From what I get from the messages is we are playing Scott's module 7-10th level. fighters & climbers. Not sure if I have time to make a new character. Burn that bridge once I get there.

    I made up a couple magical robes, cloths, weapons for my personal game I run using the Magical items pdf and some creative thinking. We can use them if you want, if you want i'll make some armor up as well, i just haven't got to it yet for my game.

    Up to you guys. It will be on my google drive so i'll just show you, but let me know if you want to use them i'll make up some more and some armor as well.

      I made the robes and cloths because there is only the Archmagi robe in the magical items guide, which is a legendary robe. It will be a LONG time before people in my game would ever find that.

    Whats the deciding factor here? Are we going to use time in this session making up new characters going over rules? are we going to play? what level? who is dm`ing? I'm not the type of person who likes to be unprepared, so please give some info on some decisions.

      You determine how many magical items characters can find in your adventures. the game does not assume that characters need them to succeed. Magic items, when found at all, simply make the pc's better.

      Thus, you can add or withhold magic items in your adventures as you see fit. Being somewhat stingy with magic item placement, especially at lower levels, means that players will appreciate such items all the more when they find some.

      If you populate your tougher dungeons levels and adventures with more magic items, then players can influence the kind of magic items they obtain by accepting greater risks.

      *In my personal opinion we should be trying out all the aspects of the game, so in the higher levels we should be using some of the better magical items to see how they function vs. harder encounters. So whoever is DM`ing I would prepare some hard encounters to test the limits.

    So I rolled up a Blackguard, i may roll up a few different characters and see which one i want to play more. This Blackguard seems really badass and I'll most likely end up going with him.

    Ok the suggestion for next time is to look to level 10 for the playtest. A good portion of the session could be devoted to leveling and resolving any questions which arise, maybe have some neq classes in the mix. Then there's a module we can embark upon with the new PC-group.
