DnD Next (v5) Play-Test

We have good interest to run a couple of groups for play-testing the new DnD - DnD "Next", or version 5.

Preference among the current crop of attendees seems to be to run this every other Wednesday.

Please Sign Up at www.DnDNext.com and download the playtest packet.

We'll bring along printouts of pre-generated characters at the party's level, so new folk are able to jump right in.  We're also mixing up the DM from session to session, so we get a mix of both DM-styles and play-experience during the test.

Great game. Me and my son had a great time. Lot of well thought out conflict. Also nice to be adventuring with my son in the same dungeon I started role playing in many years ago.

Yeah, I'm still bummed I had to miss it. I will be there for the next session in 2 weeks. What did you end up running?

Some more of the same Caves campaign. The group returned with some fresh faces and wagons sent by the merchants (another fighter, and a cleric who immediately decided "lawful" isn't as much fun as being choosy). A few fresh goblin tracks detected outside, so the group went in a higher entrance, took out some Hobgoblins caught playing dice, freed a Gnoll and an Orc prisoner (both sadly had to be killed soon after), and mapped carefully back to the area holding the merchant's stuff. The Ogre's remains are becoming rather smelly.

For Tom C, regarding the use of Parry when playing a ranged Fighter from the D&D Next Q&A blog:

"If a fighter focuses on ranged weapons, what use is Parry? What could be substituted for it?

By focusing on ranged weapons, the fighter has chosen to remain away from danger—thus accomplishing the goal of parry, which is to improve survivability for the class. Being at range is a big advantage, especially if you have other characters that are getting up in melee. While it’s true that the fighter is sacrificing some damage by choosing, say, a longbow over a greataxe, the fighter is still doing comparable damage to the fighter with a long sword, who may have a slightly higher AC but is still exposed to more danger than the archer fighter. Right now, we have no plans to swap out parry for ranged fighters, but we’ll be watching the feedback closely for any indication that we might need to reconsider that."

It helps to have the materials, but we normally have a couple of sets (looks like tonight is turning out far from "normal")

Sorry, guys. Just confirming that I won't be able to make it! Besides the icy road conditions later tonight, I have to read a 50+ page design document for a meeting tomorrow.

I will be there, might be a little late as I have to get car from the shop. Also my materials are all in my other car, so I'll not have char sheets etc.
