Garden Pool is proud to announce that a food forest is finally coming to Phoenix! This is the biggest GP Volunteer Project yet, and we can use all the hands we can get to help make this a reality. Please spread the word and invite everyone!

We will get started early in the morning and a yummy breakfast and lunch will be served to all of the volunteers, but you are welcome to show up at any time to help.

In this project we will be planting an amazing selection of fruit trees that food foragers can access. It is a true food forest in Phoenix! There is a tilapia pond that is already dug and needs lined. There is also an amazing GP greenhouse already built that needs shaded and plumbed and a chicken coop that needs to be extended.

Bring your swim attire and feel free to swim in the gigantic pool!

We could use volunteers to help build and also tools for the volunteers.

Here is an infographic for this project: http://gardenpool.org/?attachment_id=3651

Tools are needed for volunteers:

  • Cordless or Corded Drills
  • Driver Bits and Drill Bits.
  • Reciprocating Saws
  • Circular Saws or Power Miter Saws
  • Hand Saws
  • Sawhorses
  • Extension Cords & Power Strips
  • Tin Snips
  • PVC Cutters
  • Utility Knives
  • Tape Measures
  • Writing Utensils
  • Shovels
  • Wheel Barrels
  • Gloves (Leather Work & Latex/Nitryl)
  • Hammers
  • Squares & Levels

Restrooms, breakfast, lunch, & water will be provided for all volunteers.

Don't worry if you don't have tools, we can use plenty of hands. Please help us spread the word to help us get as many volunteers as possible. We greatly appreciate your time and we look forward to seeing the GP regulars and meeting new faces at our next exciting volunteer project!

This is an all day event, so stop by when you can. There is no RSVP limit, so bring everyone!

Thanks,

-The Garden Pool Team

Lynette, please make sure that your irrigation timer clocks are set to "Auto". I think they may have been set to "Off" when we left on Saturday. We've had clouds or rain most days since then, so everything should be OK, but they need to be set back to "Auto" now.

Thank you Bob, we are going out this evening to check on everything. We appreciate all the help!

The plumbing is almost finished. Today I was able to set up the coconut in 2 of the grow beds. I also started to set up the seedling stations, but wasn't sure what I was doing was to plan, so I postponed that until I could check with Dennis.

Even though the plumbing is not quite finished, we have filled the telapia pond and have the water circulating with a fountain.

Adam, there are always things to do on the farm and the more hands the merrier. I am overflowing with basil and sage right now and Dennis is going to get me a vanilla tree! Can you believe it?

The days I spend the most time on the farm are the weekends too. I like to go out early before it gets too hot, so just let me know when you want to join the fun and show up. Don't forget your bathing suit or shorts so you can jump in the pool to cool off, but honestly, there is always something to do and I am always open to planting what someone wants.

We will be sure to go through everything with you. You are going to love the seed starting station.

I was unable to make it on Thursday, but I am more than happy to return if there's more work to do. Please post another work day, if needed. Tuesday and Thursday are not good for me next week, but other days are fine.

Did the plumbing finish, and if so, does that mean the fish pond got filled?

Well it's 6 O'clock and I've finally had the energy to open my email. I wanted to thank all of the volunteers for your extraordinary commitment and hard work. I hope you will consider this an open invitation to come back when you are in the neighborhood and see how all of you hard work has paid off and perhaps pick a piece of fruite or two when it comes in.
I'm almost always home over the weekends and Valentine is there during the week, but I'd love to say hi.

Dennis and Danielle have made this entire experience perfect and all of the volunteers, thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Community coming together to help each other is really what life is all about. I look forward to working on other upcoming projects with all of you and hopefully we will be together again in phase two.

I'll upload pictures soon. Thank you all again and please come by to say hello.

Adam, help at Fantasy Farm will always be appreciated and since I see you are a chef you are always welcome to come by and harvest, as is everyone who put such love and good energy into this project. As you all know, we planted or will plant every fruit and nut trees that can be grown here, but there are also some special trees planted especially for cooking; kiefer lime leaves and curry plant to mention two. I'm also open to suggestions for the herb bed and at some point, I'd like to develop a medicinal bed as well.

      2 · July 24, 2013

    • Adam D

Thank you, Lynette, I am totally going to take you up on this offer, and thanks for noticing on my profile that I do love to cook, and cooking with fresh home-grown ingredients would only excite me more to cook. If you don't mind, I'm going to make sure and save my food waste and scraps for your composting piles as well -- as a way to give back and contribute to your system, if you want/need it!? Herb bed? Yeah, Rosemary, Thyme, and Basil are definite staples for any list! Please let me know when you want to start work on the grow beds, and I'm there!! Saturday or Sundays are best for me!

Hi Everyone, Thank you so much for helping make this dream a reality. I thought you might want to know what is planned for Breakfast and lunch. For breakfast we'll have bagels, cream cheese, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. For lunch I'll be ordering in Chinese Food from Sui Wok. There will be vegetarian, chicken and beef choices. For dessert there will be organic, hand made chocolates and cookies from "The Bakers Daughter" as well as fresh fruit. Water will be available all day. Lunch will be served in the house so you can eat in a cool environment and get out of the heat. I've gotten in two shade tents with misters and that should help when you're working under them (they should be easy to move from section to section) and the pool is sparkling and inviting, so when you get hot, just jump right in and cool off. But the bricks around the pool will likely be hot, so please have something for your feet and a towel too, if you need one.

    Looking forward to Saturday!

Brilliant is the best description of these two and the people they attract to participate are truly amazing. This is the first phase, there will be a second phase probably in January or February and hopefully you can be part of that one. See you then.
