FREE CLASS: Growing Duckweed - Saturday 6/29/13 8:00 AM - @ The Garden Pool

  • June 29, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

If you know Garden Pool, then you know we love Duckweed! This amazing plant is the backbone of our system and now we would like to teach you how to grow duckweed for yourself.

Duckweed, particularly Lemna Minor, is a simple floating pond plant that can help purify water, is edible for humans, fish, and chickens, and has nutritional value. It is a miracle plant and we will teach you everything we know about it!

You can grow using buckets and/or fish aquariums on the patio or windowsill! Join us for a FREE class at the Garden Pool to learn a few easy and affordable methods for the beginner in duckweed growing.

In this class you will learn:

  • The basics of duckweed. What is so special about the tiny plant.
  • How to grow duckweed to suit your needs
  • How to take care of your duckweed in the off-season

We will have live duckweed, fish and running aquaponics systems so you can get a first-hand educational experience with the GP Team.

Everyone must RSVP on this page as space is limited, thank you.

We will also have the following items available for purchase and ready to go at a first come first serve basis:

  • Nile Tilapia Fingerlings and Fry
  • Duckweed
  • Nitrifying Bacteria
  • GP Coco Bricks
  • BSF Larvae

The Garden Pool is located in NW Mesa near the 101 & 202 intersection. The end of the light rail is conveniently located just 2 blocks (1.1 mile) from us.

Garden Pool now offers a FREE shuttle service to GP Events in our new GP Van. We can pick up anyone at the end of the Light Rail at the Park & Ride at Sycamore and Main St in Mesa. You must call GP at[masked] to reserve your spot on the GP Van if you want to carpool with us in the morning. We will be returning after our last GP tour of the day after the class.

We look forward to seeing you for this FREE class at the Garden Pool!

    Hi Danielle,
Do you think I should put some Duckweed and Fingerlings in the pond to get a head start? Also, hold a coconut block or two for me to start that chard! I'm very excited to see you Saturday.

Hi Lynette, we will be sure to have the coconut coir set aside for you. As for the fingerlings and duckweed, we will bring that along with us on the 20th. We are excited to see you as well!

Not entirely sure how this "meetup" site works. Do I just keep checking to see if I'm still on the waiting list? Does Garden Pool have access to my contact info in case we move up the list into the actual class? Are we notified about that or do we just keep checking? Finally, if we do t make it into the class, can we schedule a tour and buy a duckweed starter while there! Thank you so much for your patience with my ignorance about how things work here. Rhonda

AWESOME!!!!! Would I be allowed to bring my son-in-law AND my husband (who is flying in the night before). That would make my reservation a +2 rather than +1. I don't know if you can accommodate 1 more and wanted to check. Tank you so much!

What are you rates for duck weed and tilapia fingerlings? Do we need to bring our own containers?

    June 24, 2013

    • Danielle M.

We will have plenty of duckweed available for $5 a scoop. Mature tilapia fish brooders are $30 each. Also there are various sizes of fingerlings from $5-8. Yes, please bring a bucket for the fish and if you could let us know how many and what size ahead of time, so we can have everything ready for you. We will put the duckweed in a bag for transport.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
