"Follow My Photo Shoot" Basics of beginning photography

  • August 3, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • Downtown DeLand

This will be a group photo shoot through downtown DeLand. I’ll demonstrate how to recognize photo opportunities, basic instruction on photo composition and camera settings. This will be at a level for the beginning photographer, but I will try to provide something of interest to all. Bring your camera and manual for it if you have any specific questions for a camera I'm not familiar with.

We will meet at the fountain across the street from the old Volusia County Courthouse. There is parking at 132 W. Rich Ave. which is the next street north.

This is the address of my Flickr page if you would like to see some of the photos I’ve done: http://www.flickr.com/photos/91672477@N00/

You can still upload photos to this album. The deadline I gave to submit by Tuesday was only for photos to be shown at the Wednesday meeting.

Thanks, Dave! I appreciate you giving your time and knowledge to teach us. Also thanks to others in the group that are also willing to share what they know. I always learn something new at each meet-up.

I've seen two different times: 8-3 and 12-3 for the Aug. 3 event. Which time is correct??

    July 29

    • Dave Gennrich

It starts at 8am with no specific end time. Where did you see those times?

Creake in Winter Park has always had excellent classes. their Director is a photographer so it gets a lot of emphasis.

FYI - The director of the photography dept at Crealde School of Art, Rick Lang, passed away a couple of weeks ago. There is a memorial get together tonight at Crealde.

Thanks Liz! Yes, I've used used various versions of Photoshop, but currently I use PS Elements 10 for most things. I looked for Luvanurs1 on Flickr, but didn't see you. I use a Canon T1i so anything I demonstrate related to my camera should be similar.

Yes, we can do that. There are also many resources for this online. In Elements there are 3 editing modes from the easiest - guided, quick, and full, the most difficult, that operates almost the same as the regular Photoshop program. if you're not already, start in the guided mode. Here is a short video on how to do that.

Hi. Does anyone know of a good place to take a photography or photoshop class?

    July 25

    • Leon

i signed up online for a course but honestly i have learned tons from mike brown on youtube - he is spot on with excellent tools of the trade for beginners- let me know if you like him :)

      July 25

    • Leon

My apologies it is Mike Browne -photographycourses.biz- on youtube

Wow! Although I thought there was a need for a beginner oriented event, I wasn't expecting this much of a response. As a result, I have to close this meetup to any further RSVPs. My plans for this won't work with a large group.
The Wed Aug 07 meeting will remain open, so if you weren't able to get in, please attend then. There I will also take questions and review what I talked about at the photo shoot. If there is enough demand I will lead another beginner meetup in the future.

I am looking forward to this, I haven't had the opportunity to join so far because of my Father's death. But will be there August 3rd. Looking forward to it.

Dave, Looking forward to this outing and the opportunity to learn. What lens would you recommend for this? I have a 40mm prime, a 18-55mm kit lens and a 70-300mm zoom. I would like to pack light but could bring all if recommended.

    July 17

    • Dave Gennrich

Hello. Since this is geared more toward the beginner that may only have the kit lens, I was planning on using an 18-55mm the most. For anything we will be doing formally, you won't need the 70-300, but toward the end you'll be free to shoot anything you want.

      Thanks Dave.

Hello... Something came up and need to leave by 9:30 and event starts at 8. Is it ok to leave early and is it enough to go through some of the shooting? Thanks!

    July 17

    • Dave Gennrich

Hi Julio. Yes, that's OK. We'll be alternating between short demonstrations and everyone shooting so you will be there long enough to do both.

      July 17

  • Dave Gennrich

Thanks Kenneth. Sure, you can bring a guest if it ends up being possible. Just add him to your RSVP so I know how many to expect.

I plan to attend. Can I bring a friend who's visiting from Texas? He's got a DSLR, too, which he'll have with him on this trip. P.S., love your Flickr page!

Absolutely love your photos and want to learn as much as poss from you. Do you use photoshop? I just aquired Aperture and everything is a big learning curve as I switched to Macbook Pro at the beginning of this year. If you feel like seeing a few of my Flickr pics, my corny page is Luvanurs1 - if you have time, or do I have to invite you? I use a Canon Ts3 and have only just started to learn manual shooting. I will be taking a course at Crealde in the Fall. Liz Luedke
