Beehive construction plus an intro to beekeeping!

We are hosting a budding professional beekeeper in Ottawa who will soon be working with Just Food ready to show people how a beehive can be constructed. We are also going to assemble beehives. For the exchange, he's going to do an intro to beekeeping! If you want to get some great ideas on this fascinating science, come on out.

Tools required: The only tools involved would be hammers, nails, staple gun, scissors. If someone has a hydraulic staple gun, all the better!

The GSMakerspace has only a few hammers and a staple gun, scissors (but no hydraulic staple gun)!

"Update - after receiving and inspecting the products, I've decided to go with screws vs nails. That being said, there will be no need for hammers. The following items could be of help. Bring what you can.

* 1-2 drills and/or impact drills (for screws and drilling pilot holes) 508 holes/screws to be exact.

* 2-4 rubber mallets

* 4-8 standard staple guns. (I supply staples)

* 4-8 blue permanent markers (pens will do)

If there is a belt sander of sorts available, it would be awesome."

... does anyone have any news on the wait list yet ?

    April 11, 2014

    • Booth

Hi Vincent, we're looking at another event to hold in the near future. In the meantime if anyone cancels, you are going to be notified. There is also the Eastern Ontario Beekeepers Association meeting on Monday night.

My little girl has been sick today and so I have changed my RSVP to a no right now instead of making the next person on the waitlist wait until tomorrow morning to find out they can go in my place in case she's still not feeling well. Pretty bummed that I can't make it- I was really looking forward to this. Enjoy yourselves, everyone.

Oh no, I hope she is doing better soon. It is too bad, but you get to spend time making sure she's ok. Don't worry, we'll also discuss a future event related to bees!

Mycelium to give away: There was a draw at the end of the course last weekend on "Formation- Les technologies du future" with Francis Gendron and Vincent Leblanc. I won an inoculated log and a huge bag of mycelium - more than I can ever use. Anyone who wants to grow mushrooms please let me know, I can give you some mycelium.

I'll bring the bag to the Beehive Build meet. Vincent said it "planting" in April is optimum.

9/64" I believe is the recommended size for #8 2.5" deck screws. I have tons of #2 robinson bits.

Thanks, Ron. I'll see what I can muster up.

Eastern Ontario Beekeepers Association is having an event Monday 14 April, which is open to everyone: http://eoba.ca/2014-spring-meet

There may be more contacts at that meeting for upcoming events too :)

.. hi, hoping another bee keeping workshop will come up soon !

    April 8, 2014

  • Agata

I talked with my mom over the weekend, and she said she cannot make it to this one... glad to see there are a couple of people who want a spot and can make use of hers.--- Booth, I think you will have to adjust the RSVPs so that the two who want a spot can get the two open ones... not sure why it's not doing that automatically for you.

I don't see a fee for this anywhere... is there one, or are we simply doing an exchange with Ron- our labour for his knowledge/information?

    April 2, 2014

    • Booth

Ah, no. This group is for all of us to learn, collaborate and grow :)

Edible Ottawa Gardens Group (on Facebook) is also running a beekeeping event this Summer. Please contact "Ottawa Gardener" for details (on facebook).
(I've already contact her, she is also doing an inoculation event!)

2/3 orders confirmed! It includes all the important parts we need for this Makerspace. Feels like xmas is just around the corner for me :)

One of my orders will ship Friday and it is a full pallet and weighs over 500 lbs. I'm doubtful I'll be able to fit it all into my Honda CRV (and especially not once assembled).

Does anyone have a small utility trailer I could borrow? (I'm looking to buy but don't think I'll get one in time.)

Or perhaps someone else will be coming from Ottawa east (near St. Laurent mall) and could help with the haul?

    April 2, 2014

    • Steeves

I can help, I have a big pickup that can carry ALOT. The entire pallet can fit no problem.

I'll bring my electric staple gun. I'm not impressed with it but maybe I don't know how to use it properly. I'll also bring my regular staple gun, hammer and shop scissors. Which size & type of nails s/we bring?

    April 1, 2014

    • Ron St. L.

I will supply the nails :)
      Thanks Suzanne

      April 1, 2014

  • Ron St. L.

We will mostly just be using nails.
Some of the work I thought we would be doing is assembling 300 frames but it turned out that ordering them pre-assembled was actually cheaper (go figure).
A standard staple gun will likely still come in handy since in my experience, the pre-assembled frames are often missing the most important nail/staple.
Once I get those frames sometime this week or early next, I will know more what to do with them.

Besides that we will be assembling hive bodies which will only require regular hammer and nails (I will provide).

Ron, the presenter, is also bringing people, so I had to limit the attendees.

Wow! This is great! I can't wait.... my mom and I were talking about getting a beehive set up at her place. She'll be happy to come out to this with me!
