Well I am getting really excited about our hike on Fire Island! I wanted to give the group a few more details.
Penn Station – Where to meet?
Let’s meet in front of the Starbucks near the LIRR tracks in the lower level concourse. The concourse has an A/C/E subway station on one end and a 1/2/3 subway station on the other end. Starbucks, and the LIRR tracks, are closer to the 1/2/3. Note there is a Starbucks close to the A/C/E station but that is NOT where to meet.
Remember, we are meeting at 10:30 and get your round trip ticket to Sayville before joining the group.
Remember to bring warm clothing and good shoes. Expect it to be 10 degrees cooler on Fire Island. Bring sunblock. Looks like we will have SUN on Saturday!
Something to keep in mind is that cell phone reception on Fire Island is terrible. I know from experience that AT&T is terrible , but I hear Verizon is supposed to be better since they have a tower on the island.
Bring a packed lunch and/or some substantial snacks. We will take a break at some point early into the hike. I don’t believe there will be any stores open on Fire Island.
Our dinner reservation is at 6:30 and we need to be finished and out the door by 8:15 at the very latest. They will take our drink and dinner order at the same time so we aren’t pressed for time. Please take a look at the Cull House menu and determine what you want in advance. Also, try to bring cash so settling up is easier. Figure a 20% gratuity.
So after a little research I wanted to give the group an update on this hike.
This will be a hike on Fire Island which is a barrier island off the south shore of Long Island. After a LIRR trip from Penn Station we will take the Sayville Ferry to Fire Island. We will first hike the Sunken Forest, which is a rare untouched ecological habitat. We will then walk back to Cherry Grove and head to the Pines passing through the infamous “Meat Rack” Once we get to the Pines we will change pace and walk along the ocean. Depending on time we may make it as far as Barretts Beach. We will take the 5:45 ferry back to Sayville from the Pines. This is the last ferry for the day so if we miss it we all spend the night in the Meat Rack!
From the terminal in Sayville we will take a short walk and have dinner at a local joint called the Cull House. Serving basic seafood and pastas, Yelp gives it mostly positive reviews.
Getting There and Back
We will meet at Penn Station and take a 10:55 train that arrives in Sayville at 12:41. We will take a short bus ride from the train station catching the 1:10 ferry. We will take the last ferry from the Pines at 5:45 back to Sayville. We will eat dinner starting at 6:30, and will take the 8:30 train back to Penn Station. There will be a bus to take us from the restaurant to the train station at 8:15.
Round trip ticket from Penn Station $25.50 (approximately)
Round trip Bus Service from Sayville train station to Ferry $10
Round trip Sayville Ferry $14
Dinner at the Cull House
This trip is pretty dependent on good weather. Let’s all hope for great weather which means sun and no wind. If the weather doesn’t look good I will cancel 24 hours in advance.
If you are driving meet us at the Sayville for the 1:10 ferry. Please let me know if you are driving.
Bring With You
Proper clothing. Anticipate Fire Island to be ten degrees cooler than NYC.
Sun block, sun block, sun block. Oh…. and bring sun block.
Proper footwear. Sandy beaches equals sand in shoes.
Most of all, just have fun.
