A Visit to Kykuit and a BBQ

Overview
Kykuit is the hilltop home of four generations of the Rockefeller family.    John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, built the house and it has been meticulously maintained for more than 100 years.   I have wanted to visit Kykuit since I moved to NYC and am glad to finally get the chance with the members of this group.  I have arranged for a tour of the estate that will include the main house and gardens.

Group member David and his husband Robert have generously invited the group to their Tarrytown home for a BBQ after the tour.    Robert is a landscape designer and we will be hosted in their lovely garden. You can see Robert's work at the following website:

www.WestoverLD.com

In thinking about the tour of the house I thought of planning a later hike through the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.   Since 1983, over 1,000 acres of the Rockefeller estate have been deeded to the State of New York.  Laurence S. Rockefeller donated the property to New York State in 1999, as part of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. I will plan a hike around this preserve for Sunday, September 22 so mark your calendar for that too.

Getting There
We will take a 11:20 train from Grand Central arriving in Philipse Manor at 12:12.   We will walk to the Phillipsburg Manor/Kykuit Visitor Center in Sleepy Hollow arriving at 12:45.  A bus will take us to the main house.

The Tour
We are signed up to do the Selected Highlights Tour.  The tour will begin at 1:15 and will run 2 hours and 15 minutes.  The link below describes the tour and the house:

http://www.hudsonvalley.org/historic-sites/tours/selected-highlights-tour

The BBQ
After returning to the Phillipsburg Manor/Kykuit Visitor Center we will take a two mile hike to David’s home arriving between 4:30 and 5:00.   After some good food and socializing we will catch the 7:12 or 7:43 train back to Grand Central.   It is a short walk to the train station from David’s home.

Trip Fees
Round trip ticket from Grand Central to Philipse Manor - $19.50
Tour of Kykuit - $26 (Payable on line)

Because of the Kykuits no refund/head count confirmation policies I am asking attendees to pay for their ticket in advance through the Meetup site.   This will be my first time using it so bear with me a bit.

IMPORTANT – I NEED A FIRM HEAD COUNT TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE TOUR, AND I ALSO NEED TO MAKE A PAYMENT.  I CANNOT OFFER A REFUND FOR CANCELLATION AFTER THURSDAY, JULY 4, 2013.  IF YOU RSVP AFTER JULY 4TH I WON'T BE ABLE TO OFFER A REFUND IF YOU CANCEL.

Excellent job Phil. What a day! I know it took a lot of effort to pull that together, especially with the train snafu. Everyone somehow pulled together and got us all to our destination. The house and grounds were spectacular. And then Dave and Robert really put the day over the top by hosting the bbq. Thanks!
