  • So I was thinking we should do a winter hike.   By February we will all be tired of being cooped up and ready to get outside no matter how cold.   Hopefully we will have a little snow on the ground as we hike!

Let’s hike the Catfish Loop Trail at Fahnestock State Park.  This is a 4.9 mile hike that traverses a remote area of the park with interesting rock formations and many old stone walls.

    Getting There
We can all meet at the train station in Cold Spring.  We will need drivers to take everyone to the trail head which is a 10 minute car ride away.  Note that I will be looking for drivers closer to the hike.  For those leaving from Manhattan we will take the 9:43 train from Grant Central that will get us to Cold Spring at 11:00.

    The Hike
Follow the link below for a description of the hike.

This is considered an easy to moderate hike.  It's about a 3.5 hour hike.   Remember to wear warm clothing, and I am thinking hats and gloves will be mandatory.  Bring water as well or maybe something warm in a thermos.

    Warming Up After
We will stop by Mcguires On Main to warm up before heading home.  I found it on line so if anyone knows of a preferred place to warm up in or near Cold Spring let me know.

Will we need trekking poles and snowshoes to hike this trail?

I guess we should be expecting deep snow on the trails. Could be a challenge with just hiking boots.

Given the length of the waitlist and the 6-10 in of snow expected Thurs, I'm gonna drop off the list. See you guys in warmer weather.

By Feb 15, we may be snow shoeing more than hiking, but Fahnestock is great in any season.

Thanks for letting me know. I might ask you to meet us in cold spring to take a few hikers to the trail head.

Sounds good. I've signed up to come. Is it ok to bring Coal, my foster dog? He's hiked with groups before.

    December 24, 2013

    • Phil

We have a few hikers that bring their dogs. It's no problem.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
