SF Conservatory Opera: Postcard from Morocco

  • This location is shown only to members

Postcard From Morocco is a classic of contemporary opera by American composer Dominick Argento. Written in 1971, its music is largely tonal and lyrical and it has an existentialist/absurdist libretto reminiscent of Samuel Beckett.

The San Francisco Conservatory is presenting the opera in a new co-production with the Portland Opera. Here's some more information about it from the Portland Opera's website and the SF Conservatory's website. The opera is pretty short -- it lasts less than 2 hours.

DINNER BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE Let's plan to meet at 5:45 and grab dinner together before the 7:30 performance.  We'll meet at The Grove, 301 Hayes Street (the corner of Hayes and Franklin) San Francisco. 94102. Here's the LOCATION and here's the MENU.

The opera starts at 7:30 and is in the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall in the SF Conservatory of Music.  Tickets are $15 and $20 and can be ordered HERE WITH THIS LINK in advance. ORDER YOUR TICKETS SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. The seats are reserved so we probably won't be sitting together but we can hang out before the show and during intermission, and maybe afterward.

After you buy your ticket, add which seat you are in in the comments section below so that other Friends will know which area you are sitting in.  Maybe they can find a ticket sitting near you.

Parking and Public Transportation:  There is street parking in the Civic Center area.  There is also the City Center Plaza Garage located at 355 McAllister St
San Francisco, CA 94102 which is open until Midnight. The Conservatory is about a block from the Van Ness MUNI Metro Station. Here's a map and directions.

There is a $1.00 Group Support Fee to RSVP which goes to keep this Meetup group up and running.

If you can't come to dinner, you can still come to the opera. If you can't come to the opera, you can still come to dinner. Bring your friends!

    Hey Richard -
It was great meeting you and Wayne and Lloyd! (I already knew Baruch.) I had a great time too. I'm really glad you liked it! Modern opera can be kind of risky, but this was good all around. Let me know if you have ideas for other get-togethers.

Stephen, thank you for organizing this! I enjoyed the opera--in fact, was surprised how good it was in itself and how strong the student voices were who sang it. But it was even better to have the companionship of four really interesting guys in my age category. Looking forward to the next one!

Hey Richard - Thanks for the suggestion! I've added it to the Meet Up announcement. See you Saturday -- I'm looking forward to meeting.

I bought tickets and paid the supporting fee but saw no way to select seats in the process. Re dinner, The Grove at Grove and Franklin has a kind of Moroccan atmosphere (but not Moroccan food). It's inexpensive and good.
