POSTPONED: Gay Camping

Camping trip for the outdoorsy gay guys. We can finalize dates (fall is great for camping) and location (tons of great camping in California) later.

This event has been in the works since earlier this year. Conventional wisdom dictates it wasn't going to happen.

Ok guys. As no one has stepped up to fully organize the camping trip for tomorrow, I'm going to de-activate this event, and we can try to better prepare for this in the coming weeks/months. I am also going to propose a movie & beer night for Friday. Hopefully a few folks can make it!

Ok don't drink but I like a good movie .

Joe, everyone, in response to your sailing offer let me suggest a future possibility that's free. I teach advanced sailing as a volunteer at the nonprofit co-op Cal Sailing Club on the Berkeley Marina. I've taken many people sailing in one of our 26' keelboats and am happy to do so as long as there's some advance planning. Last gay group I took, some sailed while the rest prepped a picnic, then I took that group. Let me know if this appeals. We can try November if you like though winds are light until spring. David

good -- I'll look at my sked and post something. BTW it won't be dinghies as I can take up to 9 guests in keelboat. Will keep in touch.

Great! Let's do it soon while the weather holds up!

Someone needs to edit the event to reflect wtf is actually going on

Hey guys, what's the final plan?

    October 10, 2013

  • Joe

    Hi guys -
I agree that it is going to take a lot of organization to do the camping trip right. If folks want to get together for a couple hours at a potluck picnic on Saturday afternoon 10/12, around 1:15, I'm willing to try to organize that quickly. Options are:
Roberts Park in East Bay Regional Park District, or Emeryville Marina.

Everyone would need to bring something to feed at least 5 people (Emeryville has bbq pits). To get to Emeryville, there's the Emery-Go-Round bus, which departs from MacArthur BART station and goes to the Watergate apartments. It is a short walk to the park area from there. Parking is also available.

Another option would be to take a handful of people sailing for the afternoon, but as I don't have my own boat, I would need to charter one, and there would be costs associated (about $65/pp, 6 person limit).

Send a message or post a note on here if you are interested either way.

Hi guys, my experience is this takes about 5-7 people willing to devote considerable time/effort to making it happen. It also takes careful planning, rather than scrambling, and the willingness of most attendees to pitch in so the burdens are shared. We did a fantastic gay meetup camping trip to Big Basin Redwood S.P. two years ago (thanks again Brandon!).
Whether by car or backpack, if you don't plan and execute well, you end up with people without tents, lousy food, and not enough drinks. I'm happy to help out with some future planning (I plan sailing trips frequently) but it really works best if you have Google Dox and a serious core team. best, David

I will happily help plan a trip but it sounds like this one is too much too late for us to be able to effectively pull it off

    Hey Guys
Just got off the phone with the park reservations office. You cannot reserve a group space less than 5 days in advance. This means a group spot is off the table unless someone has already secured a reservation. Family sites, which can accommodate 2 cars per site are still available but they are at Anthony Chabot and Dell Valle campgrounds and show only 2 or 3 sites available. There is 1 group site available at Portola Redwoods SP which costs $335 per night. I'm ok with a couple single sites (no guarantee they'll be near each other) or the group site if we get enough interest, but we will need to get a count fairly quickly. Welcome any thoughts or comments.

I do have the time to work on making arrangements and doing other things, but I've never done this before. if any of you know how to handle this, please give me a call and walk me through it. then I could help make future arrangements for the group. I'm semi-retired and can follow instructions My number is[masked] and land line[masked] (preferred) I have to know what the group is looking for, what type of facilities, and all the rest. this could work out for future events as well. I'm willing to give it a try, if someone wants to provide some instructions

    Hi guys -
We need someone to bring better organization to this trip. Any takers? Unfortunately, I'm not able to take it on right now due to work commitments.

  • Rick

Noticed that this is a hike-in camping site. Most of my stuff is geared toward drive in camping (large tent, camp stove etc..) and not conducive to carrying very far.. I may have to bail if that's the case.. Anyone know for sure? If so, hit me up if interested in Big Basin or similar that has drive up sites (AKA Glamping!)

    Cheers

    October 7, 2013

    • Michael C.

I'm in the same situation. Most of my gear caters to drive up sites. Although heavy, have great meals and comfort.

      October 7, 2013

  • Mark

So is there a body count at this point?

How many camp site have been reserved? Are we responsible for reserving our own?

I assume meals are being done by each individual, what cooking facilities are there? BBQ pits/fire pits/do we have to bring camp stoves? I assume they have running water. Is it Friday sat leave Sunday?

Trying to decide if I want to join

Did a little googling, since info here is light. There are only 3 group camping sites at Brione. Brione only takes phone reservations and they do not list updated availability online at ReserveAmerica. They do not answer on weekends, so if someone wants to follow up they'd have to tomorrow. No word on cost on the website either.

    Brione's website: http://www.ebparks.org/activities/camping/family#1

    Some nice photos:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/rigphoto/sets/72157625912519836/

    BAHiker has a great writeup:
    http://www.bahiker.com/eastbayhikes/bcbriones.html

Yelpers suggest pre-mapping hikes carefully prior to arrival.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/briones-regional-park-martinez

I'd take point and run with it - but I have yet to receive my rehearsal schedule, so it's possible I would not be able to go. Anyway - if someone is available to take point that would be the next logical step. Otherwise, I would say put the nail in this one. ;-)

I would like to go, anyone from Redwood city or San Mateo can do car pool?

Looks like a great event and would like to participate. I don't have a car. Is it possible to get a ride from Emeryville? I can help pay for gas...
How long is the hike (distance)? Is this overnight.. do we need a sleeping bag and/or a tent.? Do we need to prepare food.? Is there a checklist of what one needs to bring..?

    October 6, 2013

  • Joe

    Hi Guys -
I have to work Friday, so we need someone to raise their hand and organize this trip for everyone.

Hi all, so I'm assuming we are planning our own meals? I have lots of camping gear and will be planning on bringing food for myself to cook, but was wondering if there was a plan to have a group meal. Also how many sites have been reserved?

    October 6, 2013

  • Leonard

I would need a ride as my car is being shipped from Hawaii. Anybody coming from East Bay?

    Hey Guys
First time meeting with this group. Is this trip still happening? Not much detail to go on. wondering if it's drive in or hike in, food details would be good too. Looking forward to it!

I thought we were going to go some place with a public transit connection for our first camping trip to meet each other and make friends for transportation and food for a longer trip.

Has anyone given any thought to car pools or food sharing?

What is the hike from the trailhead like? I am 70 years old and not much up to packing into a campsite.

      Where and When???

I hate to say , but this is never going to happen . The questions should be what Date and Time . Like grown ups its our responsibility to confirm and attend ,and find our own rides , food ect . I dont think that at this rate its ever going to happen . Nobody is communicating .
Maybe next yr ..... Im out this year ,good luck ....

Anyone willing to meet up soon (within 2 weeks) and actually start planning a trip? My suggestion...a few of us meet up at a Starbucks or some place with WI-FI. We can bring our laptops/pads and start researching some locations and dates. We can propose it to the whole group afterward. Feel free to message me if you're interested. Thanks guys.

Hi guys. Just joined and looking forward to camping with you. Just an idea, camping at Johnson's Beach & Resort in Guerneville is great. The campsite is only 2 blocks from Main Street. And Burke's canoe rental is a short drive away. After a beautiful 10 mile river ride, they pick you up and bring you back to your vehicle.

That's cool with me. I'm supposed to help a friend put his house back together that weekend, or so I'm told. It's also Folsom Street Fair, if anyone cares.

Im thinking the weekend of Sept 27-29 . Maybe bike down to Montara lighthouse hostel, or reserving spots at Angel Island or Marin headlands, or Samuel Taylor Park. Id like to go by bike, (angel isl, marin hdl not accessible by car) but S. Taylor is drive (or bus) in
    Does this prick your interest?

Whoever is making arrangements: Check out Pie Ranch near Pescadero. They sometimes have camping (on nice soft grass) for groups, plus an outdoor kitchen, woodd-fired pizza oven, beautiful farm fields, chickens, a flour mill (they supply organic flour to Mission Pies) etc. I'd ride my bike down if someone is willing to sag the camping equipment.
OH, they also have a monthly barn dance, first Saturday, I think.

Angel Island is definitely convenient, although camping in the redwoods would be more beautiful, as there's the tree canopy overhead. Big Basin, Portola Redwoods SP, or Salt Point SP (near Jenner) up north is spectacular and quiet (although much further).

    June 2, 2013

    • George

Love the REDWOODS, I'n not necessarily a tree hugger, BUT when it comes to REDWOODS, they are unmatched!!!

      June 5, 2013

    • George

I do however see Angel Island as a trial campout to meet each other and plan for a more complicated trip like the REDWOODS :-)
