Join us for a relaxing day trip on the Amtrak train to Santa Barbara, a beautiful town with whitewashed walls, red tile roofs, gentle slopes, rolling waves, swaying fronds, stately churches and private estates. The train is comfortable and a great way to meet and get to know the members of our group.
If you have any friends that live in Santa Barbara please invite them to meet us at the train station in Santa Barbara when we arrive. It's always fun to meet people who live in the area.
On Saturday, September 28, 2013 we'll take these Amtrak trains:
Pacific Surfliner 763 departs Van Nuys at 9:36 AM and arrives in Santa Barbara at 11:40 AM.
Pacific Surfliner 796 departs Santa Barbara at 6:58 PM and arrives Van Nuys at 9:05 PM.

You can join the train in other cities on the route like Glendale or Burbank. The return train terminates in Glendale and will not return to Los Angeles Union Station, so it is best to start at and return to the same train station where your car is parked at.
TRAIN TICKET COST:
$38.40 roundtrip with the Santa Barbara Car Free Train 20% Discount offer (normally $48.00 without the discount.)
You are responsible for purchasing your own Amtrak ticket or making your own transportation arrangements to meet the group in Santa Barbara.
To purchase your train ticket for travel utilize the Santa Barbara Car Free 20% Discount offer on their website by going to http://www.santabarbaracarfree.org/register.htm You must register on this website to obtain the link to purchase your discount ticket on Amtrak's site. Have your information and credit card ready because you'll need to purchase your ticket online immediately.
You can't use the discount for purchasing a ticket on board the train, nor at a train station nor on the phone from Amtrak. You must purchase your ticket at least 3 days in advance to get the 20% discount by Tuesday, September 24, 2013. This offer is available only on the regular adult fare and can't be combined with any other discounts.

WHAT TO BRING:
This event will require a lot of walking. Wear comfortable walking shoes, a sweater or jacket, a hat for sun protection, and sunglasses. Also bring money for lunch, dinner and shopping.
PARKING AT VAN NUYS AMTRAK/METROLINK STATION:
There is FREE parking at the Van Nuys Amtrak/Metrolink Station. There is free parking at some other train stations too.

We'll start off by walking downtown to go to the SOL (Seasonal, Organic and Local) Food Festival which is a couple blocks from State Street. Sol Food Festival is a one day community based event to raise awareness of sustainable, organic, local food systems of Santa Barbara County. We can try some food there for lunch at the Garden of Eatin'. Check out the festival's website for details at http://solfoodfestival.com/
After visiting the festival there are several options for the rest of the afternoon. You can stay at the food festival and participate in their related activities. You can also visit State Street which is the main street with everything from boutiques, galleries, bars, and of course, La Arcada, a prosperous retail space that dates back to the 1920's.
Victor from SENSE of LA Meetup group may be offering some touring options of Santa Barbara in the afternoon. You can see his group by CLICKING HERE. You can always join people for other sightseeing options also.
Other attractions worth visiting are the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the beautiful gardens at Alice Keck Park, and city hall.
You also have the option of bringing your own bicycle on the train. Another option is renting bikes for a ride along the coast bike path and a visit to the beach.
Louis will be leading a 22 mile bike ride after lunch which you can sign up for by CLICKING HERE.
You can also take a bus or walk to Mission Santa Barbara. The official literature calls Mission Santa Barbara "Queen of the Missions for its graceful beauty." Founded on December 4th, 1786, it was the tenth of twenty-one Franciscan missions in California. It still functions as a church today.
At 4:30 PM we'll meet at Santa Barbara Shellfish Company located at the end of the Santa Barbara pier at 230 Stearns Wharf which specializes in fresh seafood. You can see many other choices on their menu by CLICKING HERE.
At 6:00 PM head back toward the Santa Barbara Train Station. You can walk along the waterfront if time permits.
