Field Trip to Botanical Gardens & Museum of The American Indian, & Mitsitam Cafe

Let's stroll through the lovely and FREE Botanical Gardens!  Across the street, the second museum has a unique cafe which serves food inspired by Native American cuisine.  It's one of my favorite places in the city and a fabulous deal.

The best part is that admission to both places is FREE!  Plus the Botanical Gardens offers a free 45 minute tour to guests.

The food in the Mitsitam Cafe is well prepared and well priced. Last time I was there I got a Bison Ribeye steak roasted in a fire pit for $15. That's right, I ate the last known Bison! Just kidding!  And dont worry, there are plenty of food options for vegetarians.   Lots of main courses are around $7-$8 (like the buffalo burger), and side dishes and desserts are $3-4.

Mitsitam Cafe sample menu: (changes seasonally and daily)
http://www.mitsitamcafe.com/content/menus/winter%20menu%202013.pdf

Menu highlights have included Braised Rabbit, a Buffalo and Duck burger, Purple Potato soup, white corn dumplings with tree custard honey, heirloom bean salad, Pine nut and rosemary tart, lots of things I can't pronounce, etc. And there always seems to be some version of buffalo steak on the menu.

Directions:
By metro, take the Orange or Blue line to the Federal Center SW station. The museum is only 2 blocks away and very easy to find since it stands out as the only large glass domed building.

Michael is waiting just inside the entrance, by the information desk.

And he also would like to add that the entrance is on the side facing the capital building and the mall.

Michael also would like you to know that he is wearing a bright orange shirt and will wait at the info desk until 2:30 for any stragglers.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, I made Michael the new event host for this meetup and I will be be skipping it since I'm actually hosting weekend events for the next few weekends in a row (Embassy Row and the Fairfax Fair). Michael wanted me to let everyone know that he is running a bit late and he will be going direct from the metro to the botanical gardens without stopping to wait for people. He expects to be at the botanical gardens at 2 PM. Have fun!

I'll be a tad late...the commuter bus I'm on runs every half hour and I sadly missed the earlier one. looks like I'll be arriving at Smithsonian at 2pm. I'll do my best to find you at the garden!

This is one of the coolest meetups I have seen on here, but it also conflicts with some of the best parts of the Science and Engineering Festival at the Convention Center. I'm bowing out - hope to get a chance to meet you guys sometime in the future!

Can someone post a schedule with meeting places for everyone? I definitely want to see the botanical garden (I assume, still at 2pm?), and could be open to the other stuff, but it depends on timing.

Ah, new date. That's even better than trying to get in extra stuff.
The fry bread there is so yummy & is a must have for people eating Native American food 1st time!

3+ years with a virtual keypad & I still make type o's. Oh well. Please forgive me & just have a good chuckle. But hey a type o is better than an auto correct any day! lol

P.S. I am so looking forward to eating real "fry bread." We need to get to the muesums restaurany before they close for lunch. Wow it looks like a win-win! And I'm always up for that :-) .

Hi, all! This is now the same day as the kite festival. Anyone interested in getting there early and flying some kites? (Or observing...)

I've added a separate "suggested meetup" for the Kite Festival...

Great idea. I approved your cherry blossom kite meetup and RSVPed for it myself.

I used to go to D.C. at least once a month and have seen the Gardens, it's a beautiful place. I've also seen the Native American museum which is huge, strangely shaped and really cool. You just mentioned the food and reminded me of the awesome museum. Have fun y'all!
