Speed Surgery (19th Century Style)

Britain's oldest surviving purpose-built operating theatre, the Old Operating Theatre Museum is situated in a herb garret in the roof of St Thomas's Church. Built in 1821 for poor women, the theatre has been restored with original furniture and equipment, including a 19th-century operating table, surgical instruments and pathological specimens. Visitors enter via a vertiginous wooden staircase to view a pre-anaesthetic operating theatre with tiered viewing seats for students.

IMPORTANT NOTE - please do not click on the venue name to see it in maps - instead, cut and paste the postcode. I have no idea why the venue link is wrong, but it will take you out in the sticks of South London - instead you need to be at London Bridge.

On Saturdays, we can watch a surgical demonstration presented within the original architecture of the old operating theatre. Before the advent of anaesthesia, an operation had to be swift. Without hand-washing or antiseptics, the chance of later infection was high. Don't worry, this is a sanitised demonstration and there'll be no real limb-cutting.

Booking

Maximum booking is for 10. There is a waiting list, so please do change your RSVP if you can't make it. Those who don't make it on to the group booking are welcome to book by themselves and meet us there.

I was only allowed to make a group booking for 10 people max, but this is an open weekend so anyone else can come along.

Please call/email the venue and make an individual booking for yourself. If you do this, please take yourself off the Waiting List by unRSVPing and let me know in comments that you are booked and coming so I still know to expect you.

Meeting up

Meet at the Museum at 1.30pm - I will have a Meetup sign. The show starts at 2pm.

If there's demand, we'll go for a drink afterwards or the Spanish food and drink festival nearby.

I'm coming to this but with someone else because I couldn't get place in time. Excited! I can't go to the Spanish festival sadly as I'm going to a disused Underground station.
