Twilight Science

See the Summer Science Exhibition before anyone else at this exclusive preview packed full of exciting, interactive exhibits and events. Meet some of the best scientists working in the UK, and discuss their cutting-edge research over a cocktail. Mix up your Monday and join us for a night of Twilight Science.

Science showoff
7.30pm - 10pm
The original open mic night for scientists, Science Showoff is a chaotic mix of comedy, music and performance from people who want to share science in an exciting way.

Lab notes
7pm - 8pm and 8.30pm - 9.30pm
A natural selection of statistically significant songs from singer-songwriter Helen Arney, Royal Society University Research Fellow Andrew Pontzen and Guardian Science Weekly podcast pioneer Jonny Berliner. These songs are outliers you don’t want to dismiss!

Strange ice
6.30pm - 7.30pm and 8 - 9pm
Ice is a material so strange that it breaks almost every rule in our textbooks. The International Year of Crystallography gives Professor Andrea Sella the perfect opportunity to take stock of its properties, how it compares with other ices, and the way in which ice may be speaking to us of a future less certain than we imagine.

The sex life of insects
7pm - 8pm and 8.30pm - 9.30pm
Discover some of the incredible strategies insects use to further their species, from Natural History Museum expert Dr Erica McAlister. From super-sized sperm to dance routines and bribery, nothing is off limits for these masters of creative copulation!

Physics in the field
6pm - 10pm
Have a go yourself at some scientific experiments with these drop in sessions. Watch marshmallows expand before your very eyes or witness the amazing waterproof handkerchief.

We will also be offering you the chance to win a copy of the longlisted books in the Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books, by entering our interactive quiz.

Attending this event

This event is free to attend and open to all. No tickets are required. Doors open at 6.00pm and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE

We have been to very popular events at the Royal Society where latecomers have not been able to get in because it's been full. Please note this is advertised as a first come first served event, over which Geek Chic organisers have no control. I suggest you arrive early.

Meeting Up

We will meet inside from 6.30pm in Physics in the Field  until 7.30pm as it's a drop in session. Ofcourse people may splinter off, but the host, Jobeda, will stay in Physics in the Field until 7.30pm. Even if you are splintering off, please come and find me so I can give you a label and we can identify each other as we wander round. My number is 07809601366.

Pub after-party

There will be alcohol available for sale at this event, but in case you want to carry on drinking, there will likely be others heading over to a pub at 10pm. The pub we normally go to is the Lord Moon of the Mall. It's about 8 minutes walk away but it's very close to Charing Cross and Embankment stations. In case the host is not going to the pub, we'll give the Meetup sign to someone who is, so you should be able to find us there if you lose the group. Meet at the main foyer by the King James sceptre at 10pm to walk over together.

Pub - The Lord Moon of The Mall, 16-18 Whitehall, London SW1A 2DY.

Excellent event at The Royal Society. Top quality exhibitions and information from Prf's & Dr's.
Brilliant GC crowd. Nice to meet up with some old timers again. Jolly social at the pub afterwards too. Top notch all round.

Had another great night and met lots of new fun people as well as some regulars. Lab notes was fun and insect sex was interesting but I'm now on the train on the way home looking for bed bugs....ick! Also got on train and put my music on to find I was listening to 'she blinded me with science' totally by chance - feels rather appropriate though

Hi, sorry can't make it tonight... looks like a fun group though, see you all soon

    June 30

  • Jobeda A.

Hi everyone, I'm in the ice thingy. I'll be wondering around again at 8.30 because I don't want to sit in a lecture when I can control a computer with my brain... Yes, I did just do that. If you are alone and don't want to be call me on 07809601366. Otherwise we are meeting in the marquee for science showoff at 9pm anyway.

    June 30

  • Jobeda A.

We have scattered to the winds already! Let's meet again at 9pm at Science Showoff.

Apologies, I've had to miss this due to work... :(

    June 30

  • Jobeda A.

Hello again, physics in the Field is actually in the foyer. You will all pass through it. I am sitting in the corner by the window so come collect your label in case you are moving on quickly.

    June 30

    • Jobeda A.

I have a meetup sign on the table.

      June 30

  • Sylvie

    Queue not too bad atm

    June 30

  • Tim

I tried to get into this last year, then gave up around 18:30 when the queue was about half way to Buckingham Palace and showing no sign f moving!

I advise getting there VERY early. Some bottles of beer (etc) and a portable picnic for the time in the queue might be a good idea.

    1 · June 24

    • Shilpi

I won't be able to make it till 18.30, do u think it's too late by then? worth queuing up?

      June 29

    • Tim

I hope you get in OK and don't get rained on in the queue. I'm waiting to see whether this rain blows over so I can have a dry walk to the bus. If so I might make it around 19:30 or 20:00 and hope there is some space to get in. If it's full I'll try to find something else to do for a couple of hours then come along to the pub.

      June 30

  • Jobeda A.

Hello everyone, I am here. I'm inside so you won't find me in the queue but I hope some of you will find each other. See you in Physics in the Field from 6pm onwards.

    1 · June 30

  • Ri

I'll be in the physics in the field all night looking seriously spaced out! Lol might pop in to the insects lecture find out if they have a better sex life than me! Lol

Sorry Jobeda you know I can't control my stupid jokes!

    June 30

  • Lynn C

I'm hoping to get there by 6pm - cant see where we're meeting in the description - in the queue? Somewhere inside?

    1 · June 29

  • Rosanella

I've never been to this 'open mic' for Scientists. Mmm.....interesting! :-)

And I'll be a volunteering physics busker at 'Paddle on the Pier', in Brighton on Saturday 5th July, where we'll be doing 'Physics on the Field' at the festival.
It was fun :-) last year at 'Paddle on the Pier' and at 'Towersey Festival'.

  • Craig K.

I'm keen to attend this event.. but don't want to wander around on my own, I don't see the point! Is anyone arriving at around 6:30pm? If yes.. do you want to meetup, & go in together? My no. is[masked]… let me know if your interested? Craig

    June 29

    • Craig K.

Hi Shilpi, thks for your message. I've decided not to come today. Although i'd love to, I just think as I can only make it around 6:30pm I don't think its worthwhile the stress, etc. Real shame… next time for sure :)

      June 30

    • Fed

Don't worry guys I meet you all there! :-)!

      June 30

  • Liam

Aiming to do the Ice talk, then the Physics in the Field until I get bored. Anyone who will be going again during this week might like to do the Science Showoff, but this is long enough to pretty much preclude any of the other talks. I should be there before 6. As it goes on until 10, I wouldn't worry TOO much about queues unless you want to do one of the timed events - rocking up at 8 is probably plausible. (Not necessarily recommended, but plausible!)

    June 30

  • Craig K.

I've decided not to come today. Although i'd love to, I just think as I can only make it around 6:30pm I reckon I'm going to be caught up in large queues & not going to find many of you, if anyone! Real shame… next time for sure :)

    June 30

  • Sonja

Jobeda, Liam and Craig (if you make it)It'll be nice to see you all again, it's been eons! xx

    1 · June 17

    • Jobeda A.

Hello honey!!!! Yes, it would be nice. I will be there as my big work deadline is that day so I'll be chomping at the bit to come out to play :-) If not dead from exhaustion. x

      1 · June 22

    • Craig K.

Hi Sonja, yeh.. would be great to meetup again. I can't get there until 6:30pm, do you think there is any point in going at that late time?

      June 29

  • Craig K.

Hi Jobeda.. will arriving at 6:30pm be ok.. am I likely to get entrance into the event?

    June 1

    • Jobeda A.

I think it will be fine Craig. There's kind of a few things going on, so not a cut off point as such. Are you still living in Brighton? If you're coming up just for the event, it's a risk. Maybe call them and ask?

      June 16

    • Craig K.

Hi Jobeda.. I am now living in London, working in Shepards Bush. I can only arrive the earliest at 6:30pm… is there any point in coming, will there be other people I can meetup with at that time & wander around with?

      June 29

  • Jobeda A.

Thanks to Liam and Grace for sending me this event!
