See the Summer Science Exhibition before anyone else at this exclusive preview packed full of exciting, interactive exhibits and events. Meet some of the best scientists working in the UK, and discuss their cutting-edge research over a cocktail. Mix up your Monday and join us for a night of Twilight Science.
7.30pm - 10pm
The original open mic night for scientists, Science Showoff is a chaotic mix of comedy, music and performance from people who want to share science in an exciting way.
7pm - 8pm and 8.30pm - 9.30pm
A natural selection of statistically significant songs from singer-songwriter Helen Arney, Royal Society University Research Fellow Andrew Pontzen and Guardian Science Weekly podcast pioneer Jonny Berliner. These songs are outliers you don’t want to dismiss!
6.30pm - 7.30pm and 8 - 9pm
Ice is a material so strange that it breaks almost every rule in our textbooks. The International Year of Crystallography gives Professor Andrea Sella the perfect opportunity to take stock of its properties, how it compares with other ices, and the way in which ice may be speaking to us of a future less certain than we imagine.
The sex life of insects
7pm - 8pm and 8.30pm - 9.30pm
Discover some of the incredible strategies insects use to further their species, from Natural History Museum expert Dr Erica McAlister. From super-sized sperm to dance routines and bribery, nothing is off limits for these masters of creative copulation!
Physics in the field
6pm - 10pm
Have a go yourself at some scientific experiments with these drop in sessions. Watch marshmallows expand before your very eyes or witness the amazing waterproof handkerchief.
We will also be offering you the chance to win a copy of the longlisted books in the Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books, by entering our interactive quiz.
Attending this event
This event is free to attend and open to all. No tickets are required. Doors open at 6.00pm and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE
We have been to very popular events at the Royal Society where latecomers have not been able to get in because it's been full. Please note this is advertised as a first come first served event, over which Geek Chic organisers have no control. I suggest you arrive early.
We will meet inside from 6.30pm in Physics in the Field until 7.30pm as it's a drop in session. Ofcourse people may splinter off, but the host, Jobeda, will stay in Physics in the Field until 7.30pm. Even if you are splintering off, please come and find me so I can give you a label and we can identify each other as we wander round. My number is 07809601366.
There will be alcohol available for sale at this event, but in case you want to carry on drinking, there will likely be others heading over to a pub at 10pm. The pub we normally go to is the Lord Moon of the Mall. It's about 8 minutes walk away but it's very close to Charing Cross and Embankment stations. In case the host is not going to the pub, we'll give the Meetup sign to someone who is, so you should be able to find us there if you lose the group. Meet at the main foyer by the King James sceptre at 10pm to walk over together.
Pub - The Lord Moon of The Mall, 16-18 Whitehall, London SW1A 2DY.
Geek Chic costs: Full Membership of this group is £15 a year. You can attend two events for free. You can pay any time by Paypal using the link on the left navigation pane, or
