Weather Mapping: September Meetup

This month's GeoDC meetup will focus on weather mapping! Look back for updates as speakers are confirmed.

  • Weather maps can be informative and beautiful. Dave Cole will show the latest work MapBox is doing processing weather data from partners like Weather Decisions Technology and directly from the National Weather Service's Doppler Radar stations into fast, interactive web maps.
  • Ian Livingston of the Capital Weather Gang will talk about map usefulness in weather communications.
  • Dave Guarino of Code for America will talk about using the Weather Underground API to do silly things (like avoid the fog in San Francisco!)
  • Juan Thomassie from USA Today will show his work building a live hurricane storm tracker.

We'll meet at 7:00 pm at the upstairs bar at Stetsons at the intersection of 16th and U Streets NW. Introductions and lightning talks will start at 7:30 pm. Presentations will be followed by lots of time for questions, follow up, networking, and beers.

Stetsons is a 21 and over venue. If you're not yet 21 but want to attend, message us via meetup and we'll do our best to get you in.

GeoDC meets on the first Wednesday of the month to socialize, network, and hear about the work people are doing with maps, GIS, geodata, and more. Join this meetup group, follow @Geo_DC on Twitter, and join our Google group for updates.

Do you have something you'd like to share with the group? Let us know!

I sprung a conflict and had to miss the meetup. Are there any slides or presentation materials online? Thanks :-/

Hi, I'll be giving an online workshop for Maxent species distribution modeling, to a small group of ecologists in Colombia and am looking for a Spanish speaking GIS person who might be interested in learning Maxent and able to join the workshop to help with translation. It's going to be very casual and tailored toward entry level participants. Everyone speaks some Spanish and some English, but it would be useful to have an expert in both. I hope to set up a local one at some point, which I will announce here when I do. Thanks

Will try to attend. (May be crazy at work, though.) Hopefully someone will mention http://openweathermap.org/ , which is a pretty cool open weather service.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
