Hike returns along The Mall passing several monuments and gardens.  Sneaker hike along paved and gravel flat paths. The sites include the Franklin Delano Roosvelt, George Mason, MLK and Thomas Jefferson Memorials as well as Capitol and Botanical Gardens. We will pass the Washington Momument, World War II, Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials as well as the Reflecting Pool and Constitution Gardens. The views along the Potomac are spectacular. The Tidal Basin is likely to be loaded with Cherry Blossoms. A nippy breeze is likely to blow off the Potomac. Dress appropriately.

Great hike with peak bloom cherry blossoms, typical exceedingly crowded DC Mall area hike for April, excellent conversation and delicious lunch with charming hikers! Great day....

A part of me is hoping the blossoms come late, because I will be in London this weekend and would hate to miss what sounds like a great hike!

Much better on April 13, though--alas--I'll be out of town. See/meet you all next time, and enjoy the walk!

With snow coming on Tuesday, um, it is highly unlikely the blossoms will peak next Sunday. Is the date of this walk being revised?

    March 23, 2014

  • Rozanne

I heard the same thing on NPR from NPS re Apr 8- for prime blossoms because of winter we've had. But one never knows what some warm sunny days in a row can do....

Peak blossoms were just predicted for April 8-12....will the date for this walk be changed?

    March 4, 2014

    • Robert Q.

Thanks for info. We will re-evaluate around March 23 or so. 4 to 5 weeks is a long time. If this prediction is correct then it will be one of the latest peak blooms in recent history. Hike date is not carved in stone. We will go on the weekend that gives us the best blossoms for the effort. We are watching the NPS prediction and their historical records. The answer to your question Nancy is a maybe...

In the race between the turtle and rabbit it is often overlooked that both actually finished the race! :)
