PLEASE BE SURE YOU AND YOUR GUEST(S) READ ALL THE DETAILS OF THIS

WATERFALL PHOTOGRAPHY HIKE BEFORE MARKING YOUR RSVP.

Your FAILURE to read the details provided to you are not the fault of the hike leader...

THIS WILL BE A S.L.O.W. WATERFALL PHOTOGRAPHY HIKE - please expect S.L.O.W.

We will not leave anyone behind!!

P.S.

If you decide to leave the group behind, you will be on your own.

***

Hello to all the adventurers out there!!

I invite you to spend the day with me to hike to 4 waterfalls on yet another

"Waterfall Photography Hiking Adventure."

The 4 Waterfalls we will hike to are:

1. FALLS on the WEST FORK of MONTGOMERY CREEK

2. LOWER BLACK FALLS at the CAMP FRANK D. MERRILL RANGER TRAINING CAMP
3. UPPER BLACK FALLS at the CAMP FRANK D. MERRILL RANGER TRAINING CAMP

4. WARD CREEK FALLS NEAR JUSTUS GAP

***

1. FALLS on the WEST FORK of MONTGOMERY CREEK

There is some scrambling and possible bushwhacking to get to this waterfall. Be sure you are prepared for this sort of hiking before agreeing to attend this hike.

We may have to cross over a nice sized creek bed to reach this fall and if so, there will be about a 2 mile hike in front of us - 2 in and 2 out = 4 miles total on this hike alone. If we do not have to cross over the creek bed (on foot), then the hike will be shorter.

***There is a designated trail to get to the area of this waterfall, but you have to climb down a steep embankment to get the type of shot I got above.***

http://www.jjanthony.com/waterfalls/falls/montgomery-creek.html

2. LOWER BLACK FALLS at FRANK D. MERRILL RANGER TRAINING CAMP

There is a rope bridge on this hike that crosses over a very small gorge that one should NOT traverse on. There is some bushwhacking and off trailing to get to this fall, but it is a ton of fun once you reach the final destination to begin taking pictures of this beautiful scenery.

***There is a designated trail to get to the area of this waterfall, but you have to climb down a semi steep embankment and do some bushwhacking to get the type of shot I got above.***

3. UPPER BLACK FALLS at FRANK D. MERRILL RANGER TRAINING CAMP

This is a pretty sight to see. There is a small foot bridge at the base of the falls that one could just stand on to take pictures. The rest of the time you are on solid ground while hiking to get to this fall location.

***There is a designated trail to get to the area of this waterfall.***

4. WARD CREEK FALLS NEAR JUSTUS GAP

When driving down the old dirt road where this waterfall is located, you may miss it if you blink. This waterfall is only about 5-7 feet tall. However, there is a nice hiking trail surrounding the area where this waterfall is located and the area has a couple of creek crossings just to get from one side of the creek to the other. Nevertheless, chances are we will not hike the area since we'll have 3 other (more spectacular) waterfalls to see.

***

Please be sure to bring the following with you for this hike:

1. This is a photography hike. Please bring your camera! Again, this is a photography hike! Bring your tripod and any lenses you wish to have in order to capture the shot you desire. We will stopping a great deal during this hike to take pictures of various locations of the falls/shoals of these hikes. There are professional photographers and even amateur photographers who attend these photography hikes and this is your chance to get out in nature and learn about your camera.

There are a tremendous amount of photo ops along the trail. You won’t want to miss taking shots of the creek and nature along the way prior to arriving at our final destinations. If you see a good photo op, announce it to the group along the way so others can take advantage of it as well.

2. Please wear "HIKING" boots/shoes!!! Preferably WATERPROOF HIKING BOOTS. We "MAY" be crossing through creeks, so if you wear tennis shoes, your shoes WILL GET WET and your feet will most definitely GET COLD and REMAIN COLD!

3. Please bring a hand towel, and an extra pair of shoes and socks just in case you and/or your footwear get wet.

4. Layer your clothing and please bring a rain poncho or jacket just to be on the safe side of the weather.

5. Bring hiking poles if you have them.

6. Please bring plenty of water, Gatorade, or whatever quenches your thirst – no alcohol please.

7. Definitely bring a lunch, snacks that you enjoy, etc. We will take our time getting to these waterfalls and have lunch at some point.

8. Please bring anything else "YOU" will need to help make a hike in the woods for several hours more enjoyable for "YOU!"

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

WARNING: There WILL be some scrambling down steep embankments, and bushwhacking will be required in certain areas and there are SOME steep sections in the trail. In other words, the trail has a nice steep incline. There is no designated trail to waterfall #2 so be prepared to go off trailin.'

Some of the trails along the path to reach waterfalls can be moderate or strenuous. People attempting strenuous hikes should be in good physical condition and be equipped with proper footwear for hiking; tennis shoes may not be appropriate. I recommend hiking boots for the ankle support. For this hike, we will stay on the trails (for the most part) at all times. Also, be mindful of where you step when you reach the waterfall.

TIME: Please be on time! This is a day trip where those who start with the group, should please expect to remain with the group for this hike! If you have a set time to be at another location, you may wish to reconsider this hike. We could be in the woods for up to 6-8 hours. If you go on this hike, please simply plan to be in the woods for at least 6 hours and up to 8 hours.

CARPOOL/PARKING: If you would like to make plans to carpool ahead of the hike, please comment on this event page to see if others would be interested in joining you. Please be sure to offer funding for carpooling. I will be at the Mansell Park and Ride and anyone who lives in the area and can drive to this location is welcome to ride with me.

We will meet at the Mansell Park and Ride to carpool into Dahlonega to Don Pollo Southern Cooking Restaurant to have breakfast.

There is really no need to take a ton of vehicles into the areas where these waterfalls are located. At the Frank D. Merrill Camp (where three of the waterfalls are located) there is limited parking anyway.

CHILDREN: A child's attendance is not recommended; anyone under 18! ADULTS ONLY.

PETS: A pet's attendance is not recommended.

WEATHER: This hiking event will NOT be cancelled unless there is an 85% - 100% chance of rain on this date. I will do my best to notify those who RSVP the day before if we need to cancel due to weather. The temperature will be in the 60's on this date according to the weatherman; however, that could change as we continue through the week.

FUNDS NEEDED: Approximately $5-10 (depending on what you order for breakfast). If you join us for dinner afterwards, you will need approximately $15-25 (depending on what you order for dinner and where everyone decides to go).

DINNER AFTER THE HIKE: Depending on what time we get out of the woods, we may travel back into Lumpkin/Dawson County (or another neighboring town) for dinner. Everyone is welcome to join us for a hot meal.

QUESTIONS: If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask here or feel free to email me at: [masked].

Please call MaryAnne at[masked] if you are running late. We will only wait 10 minutes for late arrivals after breakfast if you wish to join us there.

If I am running late, for whatever reason, I WILL post a note on this meetup page to let the group know. Please do the same or call me at[masked] if you are running late.

Thank you for reading the details of this hike!

Hope to see you on the trails and hope you have a very blessed day!
MaryAnne

P.S.
I will be in a ’97 Green Honda Passport with a special needs tag.

Loved these 4 waterfalls - this is now my 6th planned hike with G.A.G. It is always so much F-U-N with these folks. Everyone laughs, enjoys the scenery. shares stories and the best part - they all love to go exploring with me!

Weather is looking wet until about noon Sat. Would Sunday be a better day?

    February 22, 2013

    • Mike H.

Bright sunny days like Sunday mean blown out waterfall pictures unless the falls are in the shade. I have an umbrella in the van. I'd like to give it a try tomorrow

      February 22, 2013

    • MARYANNE

I need to dub Dean and Mike - MaryAnne's Adventure Team... HAHAHA!! The only two things that keep me from a waterfall hike is a tornado or ice and the ice has to be pretty thick before I won't go, so I'm still in too!! Remember my story about Blood Mountain...?

      February 22, 2013

  • MARYANNE

We will need to carpool to the waterfalls as there is limited parking in 2 areas. The first waterfall we will visit is the FALLS on the WEST FORK of MONTGOMERY CREEK, then we'll hike on down to the Lower Black Falls, then the Upper Black Falls. The last one we will visit is WARD CREEK FALLS NEAR JUSTUS GAP. This one is on the side of the road and not very impressive, but I wanted to offer this option. If the group decides NOT to venture to this waterfall, it is no biggy. However, there is a nice hiking trail right around the corner from this waterfall that we could hike on that offers a good many photo ops. See you all bright and early tomorrow morning.

    February 22, 2013

    • MARYANNE

Please bring a ziplock baggie to put your camera gear in so it doesn't get wet in case you do not have any other option. :-)

      February 22, 2013

  • Steve R.

MaryAnne, I'll skip the breakfast - should I meet you at Don Pollo around 8am?

    February 22, 2013

    • MARYANNE

Yes sir. We'll leave after the group gets our jump start with a hot meal. :-)

      February 22, 2013

I'm interested. ill have to keep on the look out for the next one, though.

Live in Buford. Would most likely skip the early breakfast. Only need a coffee and hat for me. Will fine tune the meet up.

I may need a little more direction on the Mansell MARTA Park & Ride meeting spot. Google maps is not pin pointing it and never been there.

    February 20, 2013

    • MARYANNE

This is all I know... Take GA-400 to exit #8 (Mansell Road). If you are coming from the south, turn left onto Mansell Rd then RIGHT into lot. If you are coming from the north, turn left onto Mansell Rd then LEFT into lot.

      February 20, 2013

  • MARYANNE

There's a 50% chance of rain on Saturday. I may cancel if it reaches 70%. I'm pushing the limits. :-)

    February 20, 2013

  • MARYANNE

Please comment below this thread and let me know if you plan to join us for breakfast. I have a feeling there will be too many of us to go to the Picnic Cafe so we may have to venture down the road (2 blocks away) to the another eatery that serves a good hot meal. I know I have to eat before a big hike, so I'll be there for sure. Julie is riding with me and we are meeting Dean at the Park and Ride, so Dean will eat. Mike and Alicia are meeting us at the Picnic Cafe so that is a total of 5 thus far. Anyone else?
