Backpacking the Pinhoti Trail
My XHiker Wife's 2nd Anniversary !
Those meeting me at Mansell need to make a comment they are coming there or I'll NOT wait for you.
We will also meet people off I-20 at Exit 26 in Villa Rica, Wilco Travel Plaza on Liberty Rd, but you again need to tell me you will meet us there.
We will meet the Birmingham Adventure Group at Target, off Exit 188 in Oxford, AL at 9:00AM CENTRAL time
On April 21st, 2012 Roe Williams of the Georgia Adventurers Group got hitched to that fellow from Alabama, Kenneth Hyche of the Birmingham Adventurers Group, forever becoming my X - Hiker Wife !
Well... geezzzz... that fellow Ken said he'd SHARE....and...and... he's NOT been fair with me.
So I'm going back to Alabama.... and we're going to walk down that dang Pinhoti Trail to the old Shoal Creek Church...and...and... I'm going to take back Hiker Wife Roe ! ! Throw her over my shoulder...and take her back to Georgia ! ;)
We will hike the 5.8 mile section from Pine Glen campground to the Lower Shoals Shelter on the trail. This is located in section 9 of the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama. This section is known for its wildflowers, which should be in their prime. Rated moderately difficult. Make sure to bring a camera. Hiking boots a necessity. Bring plenty of water, a picnic lunch and dress for the weather.
If you don't want to backpack, some of the Birmingham Adventure Group will continue hiking the 1.2 miles to Forest Service Road 531 crossing. Optional dinner afterwards.
On Sunday, after spending the night at the shelter and hiking to our cars, we will drive to the Shoal Creek Baptist church, built in 1885 – one of the few remaining hand-hewn log churches left in Alabama. The Pinhoti Trail passes right in between the church building and the cemetery, where graves are rumored to date back to 1811. This is the setting of Ken & Roe's wedding two years ago, I'm sure we'll have some tales to tell there. ;)
Dress for the weather in layers, as you never know what the weather may be. This is backpacking, NOT car camping, so you have to pack in your gear on this (8) mile hike. Bring plenty of food ! :)
This is a NON-Drinking, Non-Smoking group event !
It's a 2 hour drive to the trailhead, so expect to be late coming back to Georgia.
Will edit in more details with event date gets closer !
