Backpacking the Pinhoti Trail

&

My XHiker Wife's  2nd  Anniversary !

Those meeting me at Mansell need to make a comment they are coming there or I'll NOT wait for you.

We will also meet people off I-20 at Exit 26 in Villa Rica, Wilco Travel Plaza on Liberty Rd, but you again need to tell me you will meet us there.

We will meet the Birmingham Adventure Group at Target, off Exit 188 in Oxford, AL at 9:00AM CENTRAL time

On April 21st, 2012   Roe Williams of the Georgia Adventurers Group  got hitched to that fellow from Alabama,  Kenneth Hyche of the Birmingham Adventurers Group,  forever becoming my  X - Hiker Wife !

Well... geezzzz... that fellow Ken said he'd SHARE....and...and... he's NOT been fair with me.

So I'm going back to Alabama.... and we're going to walk down that dang Pinhoti Trail to the old Shoal Creek Church...and...and... I'm going to take back Hiker Wife Roe ! !    Throw her over my shoulder...and take her back to Georgia !    ;)

We will hike the 5.8 mile section from Pine Glen campground to the Lower Shoals Shelter on the trail. This is located in section 9 of the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama. This section is known for its wildflowers, which should be in their prime. Rated moderately difficult. Make sure to bring a camera. Hiking boots a necessity. Bring plenty of water, a picnic lunch and dress for the weather.

If you don't want to backpack, some of the Birmingham Adventure Group will continue hiking the 1.2 miles to Forest Service Road 531 crossing. Optional dinner afterwards.

On Sunday, after spending the night at the shelter and hiking to our cars, we will drive to the Shoal Creek Baptist church, built in 1885 – one of the few remaining hand-hewn log churches left in Alabama. The Pinhoti Trail passes right in between the church building and the cemetery, where graves are rumored to date back to 1811.  This is the setting of Ken & Roe's wedding two years ago,  I'm sure we'll have some tales to tell there.  ;)

Dress for the weather in layers, as you never know what the weather may be.  This is backpacking, NOT car camping, so you have to pack in your gear on this (8) mile hike. Bring plenty of food !  :)

This is a NON-Drinking, Non-Smoking group event !

It's a 2 hour drive to the trailhead, so expect to be late coming back to Georgia.

Will edit in more details with event date gets closer !

Had a great weekend with everyone. Was nice to see old friends and meet new ones. When you can't be with family on a holiday, the GAG family is a nice substitute.

I am here at the Oxford Target. Mohan, I have a sleeping pad for you. I drive a grey Ford Fusion and am wearing an orange shirt, which should make me pretty easy to spot.

    April 13

    • Jim

I've got room for up to three people people other than myself, so if anybody else along I-20 from Decatur westward would like to car pool, let me know.

      April 17

What time are people meeting there? Depending on the car pool response, I may meet there or in AL.

So far everyone is going to Alabama...

If anybody needs to borrow some equipment, let me know. I've got extra trekking poles, sleeping bag, headlamps, etc. The sleeping bag is my son's, so it fits up to 5'6", and is rated to 20° so it is warm for the weather, but unzip it fully and you should be fine. Let me know if there's anything you need; I may have it.

Looking forward to camping next weekend. Got myself new tent & a new sleeping bag few weeks ago. I would like to borrow a sleeping pad, if anyone would like to share with me.

    April 12

    • Jim

Mohan, I have a sleeping pad you can borrow. It's an Alps Mountaineering self inflatable pad, 3/4 length. So your feet and lower legs won't have a mat under them, but in warm weather like this, that shouldn't be a problem.

      April 12

    • Mohan E.

      thank you Jim

      April 13

  • Jim

I've gone backpacking several times, so I've got a good bit of gear. But I've never stayed at a shelter. For this trip, should we not bring a tent? Do you have a list of recommended items to bring? Thanks!

    April 11

    • MoBill

The shelter is just the location we'll be camping at. Counting the Birmingham group, there are 40-50 people attending this event. I'd bring a tent, the shelters only hold maybe 8 people packed like sardines ! ;)

      April 12

  • MoBill

I'm going to assume EVERYONE signed up knows this is an overnighter. If you need gear, etc, you best be letting us know if you need to borrow or share something on this trip.
