Let's meet for coffee first to decide how to proceed.

I'll set a date and time for our first meeting after I've heard from a few people and have an idea of what might be convenient for most of us. Let me know when you are available for a meeting. I am not available after 6 p.m.

We're off to a good start, I think!

Austin, vielen Dank für Ihre Gastfreundschaft.(Thanks for your hospitality.)

Sheila, es war sehr nett von Ihnen. mir zu erlauben, meine kleine Geschichten vorzulegen. (It was nice of you to let me present my stories.)

Lori, Krystal, Debra, Andrea - es hat mich gefreut, Sie kennenzulernen. Moira - hoffentlich treten Sie uns bei! (Hopefully Moira will join!) Und Moira, es hat mich gefreut, Ihren Mann kennenzulernen. Ich bedanke mich bei ihm für seinen Tipp betreffs "fragwürdig"! (I'm grateful for his tip re "fragwürdig".)

I like the idea of meeting twice per month and building each meeting around a theme: im Restaurant, an die Musik, beim Zoll, oder was noch.

I thought Westville sounded like a convenient location both for those with and those without cars. Time and day may be more difficult to agree on ... aber ich bin sicher, dass wir uns auf etwas einigen können (...that we can agree on something).

Sheila, I know it´s quite late to ask but could I bring two friends? One is another German who is visiting and the other one is an American who may join regularly in the future.

    September 6, 2013

    • Andrea

I did not even recognized it as a mistake. "Sie sind herzlich eingeladen" also means "they are welcome" and I thought you meant that my friends are welcome to join.

      September 8, 2013

    • Andrea

But you are right, of course. I love the chance to learn from each other, no matter what language is being spoken.

    Joe,
Your concerns are valid. Mory's is a private club with Yale connections. Parking is available at the city parking lot on Broadway, but otherwise difficult. I offered Mory's as a meeting place because I am a member, but there are undoubtedly other places that people might prefer.

Why don't we cancel/reschedule this meeting so the group can locate an easier time and location. Various meetups in Hartford use Panneras, and I suspect that the same would be available in New Haven.

Good. Thanks for making the arrangements. See you Tuesday.

With Lori coming, my count now stands at 9.

  • Krystal

I've been teaching myself German for the past few months and I would love the opportunity to practice speaking. I have a German friend that has been helping. I wasn't sure how many novices you wanted in the group? Parking isn't a problem for me, I can take the bus there.

    September 7, 2013

    • Sheila T.

My count at present is only 8-10, depending on whether Lori comes and Krystal brings her friend. I have you, myself, Bill, Debra, Krystal, Andrea, and Andrea's two friends. How did you get 11? You can tell them to set up for eleven. There may be some last-minute sign-ups. If not, they can always take away a setting or two.

      September 7, 2013

    • Krystal

I'll be there. My German friend can't come, because he's in Germany so it'll just be me.

      September 7, 2013

  • Audrey

    Joe,
I'm quite fluent in German. I lived there for 2 years. And when I was living in central CT I would go to meetup in West Hartford. They mostly spoke in German. So if you are interested in going they are a nice group. Or wait for a weekend gathering in this group. I can't go midday weekday either.

  • Austin C.

    That's fine.

Once I have a number, I will talk with them. There may be a minimum for a private room. The confirmation indicates 10, but that may be negotiable. We can always have a table in the main dining area.

    September 3, 2013

    • Sheila T.

I'll let you know whatever I know by Friday morning, if that's okay.

      September 3, 2013

  • Austin C.

I will need a head count by the end of the week. In order to book a private room, Mory's is looking for 10. We seem to be a little short.

    September 3, 2013

    • Sheila T.

I believe that as of now we have six coming, with a seventh possible (I will contact her). Can we not have it at Mory's if there are fewer than ten?

      September 3, 2013

  • Audrey

    Hi, I can't come
    I work Tuesdays.
Perhaps you can have a get together with other CT German meetup at Oktoberfest in Old Heideberg Restaurant in Bethel. I think it is coming up soon. I went two years ago and it was fun!
Es wäre schön alle zu treffen!

    September 3, 2013

    • Sheila T.

That's a good suggestion. I'll discuss it with the group when we meet.

      September 3, 2013

  • Debra

I plan on coming to Mory's on Sept 10th, but might be a bit late.

  • Austin C.

As it turns out, there is a German conversation meet-up group that meets two miles from my house. (I failed to find it with an earlier search, but stumbled across it today while looking at another interest.) Rather than drive an hour each way to and from New Haven, I expect to join the local group.

That said, I have committed to hosting the meeting next week at Mory's and will do so unless another member can come up with an alternate site.

We will be sorry to lose you, but I understand. I look forward to seeing you at Mory's on the 10th, in any event.

I live in Newtown, probably evenings or weekends would be easiest for me personally.

Evenings are difficult for me. I'll see how others feel about meeting on a weekend in the future.

      August 23, 2013

  • Andrea

I may bring a friend, an American whose German is superb.
Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Same here. By all means, bring your friend.

      August 23, 2013

Wow - es wird ja schon fleissig deutsch gesprochen! Sehr gut! :)

Sorry I work Tuesdays. Another time then!
    Vielen Dank!

Sorry you can't make it. Maybe we'll try another day next time.

      August 22, 2013

I've just posted a time and location for our first meeting. I hope you can all make it. Please RSVP!

Meeting during the day would be my preference as well. Perhaps around noon.
I have a regular breakfast meeting each Wednesday and a couple of Thursday late morning appointments in a couple of weeks, but nothing else on my schedule before September 16.

    Where did you teach?

    August 20, 2013

    • Austin C.

I have a private room at Mory's at 12:30 pm on 9/10. The room can hold 14 (in a pinch) and we can order off the menu.

      August 22, 2013

    • Sheila T.

Wonderful, or should I say sehr gut? I'll put it on the calendar today. Thanks!

    Hi, I am off Wednesdays
And moving to the area in a few months. I would like to join and practice my German.

I am tied up most mornings but am free most days after 12 noon. I look forward to meeting you all!

Mory's would be great for a first meeting, at least. What days and times are best for you? I would prefer to meet during the day rather than the evening. Wednesdays are good for me, but other days might also work. If I can get even a handful of people interested in joining the group I'd like to schedule a meeting in the next 2-3 weeks.

    August 20, 2013

  • Austin C.

I belong to Mory's and would be happy to host a meeting there. But anywhere people want to meet is fine.

I'll be around for the next four weeks, then unavailable until the end of October.

Any ideas about a good place to meet? Anywhere in New Haven, CT, would work for me.
