WEST Pinnacles Meetup Sport

Hi all, I’ve found a concentrated number of sport climbs in one particular area of West Pinnacles ranging in the[masked]a, much of it 2 to 3 pitches.(Please be comfortable with multipitch skills before joining this meetup).  They are literally right next to each other or no more than a 5 to 10 minute walk from each other.  I've decided on only a day trip.  The routes are generally well bolted and a lot of fun.  I have also made photocopies of the routes to take up with you on the multipitches.  Weather dependent. Poor/no cell phone reception at parking lot, and no reception in park.

Gear

*Gear (rope, webbing, draws, shoes, harness, etc)
*Food & water
*Guide book or map of routes – Optional  (I’ll bring photocopies of the routes)
* An adventuresome spirit
*Safety is key. Look at safety guidelines on discussion board

*Helmet- Belayers best wear a helmet, this place has loose rock as compared to most other places.

Come Get Your Climb On folks

We should consider carpooling and exchange phone numbers with carpools to communicate

Suggestions? thoughts?

Suggested routes: Flumes  NE face, Badman Mezzanine, Toog's Tower(few supplemental cams/TR gear optional), Chockstone Dome, and Balconies(Balconies has long pitches would need a 2nd rope)

Directions from the North:

From the San Francisco Bay Area to the West Entrance: Take 101 south all the way down to to Soledad, turn left onto Front Street, Take the 3rd right onto East Street.  Take the 3rd right onto CA-146 E/Metz Road, turn left onto CA-146/Shirtail Cyn Road, continue to follow CA-146 E.  Turn Right onto CA 146W and all the way past the information center entrance area all the way to the parking lot at the very end of the road.  Once you get off highway 101 in Soledad, there are signs that will direct you to Pinnacles west entrance that make the route fairly obvious.

Sarah, my buddy Julian And Deborah have room in the car in east bay if you want to come on our Auburn Quarry meet up tomorrow?

Ooh, very tempting. This week has been very stressful so I think I will have to pass. I moved to San Jose, should update my profile as it still says I am in berkeley. Thanks for reaching out Michael.

    Can I get a ride?

    January 20, 2013

    • Eiji K.

Yeah man, you can ride with me[masked]

      January 30, 2013

    • Jane D.

Hey, Eiji! Do you still have spots in the car? Looks like my carpooling arrangement just fell apart, and I don't really feel like driving all by myself.

      February 1, 2013

  • Eiji K.

I think we will still have a lot of fun, particularly now that we have a smaller group we can climb pretty close to each other.

What are the grades of the routes that are still open? Should we go somewhere else like castle rock and get an early start to beat the crowds? Or to the east side?

    February 1, 2013

  • Eiji K.

I'm at work so it will be difficult for me to respond to any questions at this point.

Bad news, Naren is correct, looks like many of the routes have closed off on Feb 1st. There are flumes, toogs, and chockstone still open. I am closing RSVPs, but keeping the meetup open for those who want to climb the ones that are open. This meetup might hold 6 optimally.

Eiji, it seems like a lot of the West side is closed http://pinnacles.org/climbing_info/index.html#closures
I emailed you as well, call me.

I'll be bringing my sport rack, and trad rack (just in case), 60 and 70 meter ropes, The Pinnacles Guidebook, and all the Mountain Project printouts for the West Side. I'm planning on carpooling with Eiji but if any of the south bay folks need it, I am happy to drive separately, pick you up, and take you down with me. It's going to be fun!! Neal

Looks like we have rope, quicks and some pro. Weather is looking great for climbing. Since the weather is warm I changed the start time to 10:00 am if that's cool with you all, otherwise let me know. Most of the pitches are not super long so 60m is perfect. There are a few routes where you can put in a piece of pro but not much. Looks like I'm bringing Neal. Gabriel?

    January 31, 2013

    • Eiji K.

Naren I sent you most of the routes to your email. The Balconies has some long pitches so if you wanted to do it, you might have to trail a second 60m rope.

      January 31, 2013

    • Eiji K.

Sarah if you want to get there earlier with a few people from the meetup I can send you the route details and map and hit some routes up earlier. It gets dark after 5, so I think 7 hours is sufficient.

  • Eiji K.

Please post what you will be bringing equipment wise particularly ropes and quickdraws.

    January 26, 2013

    • Jane D.

60m rope, 10 draws + more alpine draws if needed, anchoring stuff, some trad gear.

      January 30, 2013

    • Naren

60m rope, quick draws and will bring my climbing rack as well

Hi guys - my thumb is still pretty bad and definitely not the right colour so think I'm going to have to bail :( If it magically feels much better tomorrow I will let you know! Really sorry to miss it.

    • Naren

Oh come one Dave - stopped by a thumb ;-) who needs opposing fingers

I'm in Sunnyvale. Anyone wants to carpool?

    January 28, 2013

    • sarah

Me too! I'm in for south bay carpool. I'm in San Jose just off 87 north of downtown.

      January 28, 2013

    • Jane D.

Are there more spots in the South Bay carpool? Looks like I am going sans Vitaly, so wouldn't want to drive by myself...

"Good" news: snow looks terrible, so I'm down to climb. Bad news: busted my thumb backcountry skiing yesterday, pretty sure it's only sprained but I'm going to have to see how it feels towards the end of the week :( mind is willing but the body is weak.

    1 · January 28, 2013

  • David K.

I may bail if the snow looks really good but will let you know by next week!

    • David K.

Ok I'll try to make a decision before this weekend! Don't want to be a flaker :)

      January 20, 2013

    • Eiji K.

David, I'm cool if you want to make decision a few days before the trip. I know you'll want to hit the snow if it's good and wont know until a few days before. I won't mind having a small group on this one.

Previously wrote a message I might not be able to go do to family emergency- I was able to arrange some time off from work early this week to fly out to Salt Lake City on Monday and Tuesday, so I will still be leading this meetup. Upcoming Saturday.

  • Tom C.

That sounds like a great trip. But I am in another for that weekend. Let us know how it goes and how your stash of bolt lines pans out.
