Castle Rock Park

Hey guys. Let's Get our Climb on Locally at Castle Rock State Park.

I suggest that we start at Castle Rock Falls (aka Waterfall Cliff) area http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/California/San_Francisco_Bay/Castle_Rock_State_Park/Castle_Rock_Falls/ and perhaps move to another area later. Castle Rock can get crowded on the weekends by climbing classes and therefore an early start is a must.

Things you would need:
* Climbing gear shoes and harness. Rope and webbing for top rope anchor (if you have it). We plan to be mainly top roping routes in the 5.6 – 5.11 range.
* Trad gear if you want to lead (optional)
* Snack and water
* Bug Spray (optional)
* Sunscreen (optional)
* Guide Book (optional)
* Building anchors class helpful and a lead class or leading experience helpful
* A commitment to safety.

We will meet at the Ranger Station in the parking lot off Skyline Boulevard. Parking is $5 in the parking lot or free on the side of road on Skyline. Driving directions:
https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=100749484069444226212.000467876de348f24b9b8&ll=37.367974,-122.132263&spn=0.763998,1.167297&z=9&source=embed

We should meet between 7:30 and 7:45am and head down to the cliff to get the routes before they are taken by climbing classes. If you arrive late and miss us at the parking lot, you can find us at the Waterfall Cliff by following this map:

http://files.meetup.com/2875842/IMG_8244.JPG

The approach trail is marked in blue. There are two ways to get to the cliff: A. (recommended) by crossing a falled tree just before the bridge and following the climbers trail, or B. by heading down trail to the observation platform and crossing the creek just back just before the platform.

As a reminder, please read again the GYCO liability waiver:

    Hey just a last call, anyone coming from SF who could pick up this lonely hitchhiker? If I don't hear back I'll duck out, hopefully someone else can take my spot.

    I would like to make sure that everyone signed up for this GYCO trip understands that the trip is not a guided class and that everyone is solely responsible for his/her own safety. I would appreciate if everyone answered "Yes" in their member profile to acknowledge the general GYCO liability waiver before the trip.

    Specifically to this trip: when we toprope, three things are key to climber's safety: (a) bomber anchor (only people who know how to build anchors should set them up); (b) proper tie-in to the rope; and (c) competent and attentive belayer. I encourage people who are not sure about how to do certain safety-critical tasks properly to ask some more experienced. Also, I encourage the more experienced people to politely correct others if they see some unsafe practice (I know that it is not often easy to tell someone that he/she is doing something wrong, but it may save the person's or his partner's life one day).

    I am sure that everyone will have a fun and safe day tomorrow.

      According to weather.com, it should be sunny on the weekend and the temperature perfect for climbing. It may be cold the first hour or so because we will start early.

      You can leave anytime. It is about 20 minutes back uphill to the parking lot. As our plan is to start early, hopefully we will get a good amount of climbing done by early afternoon. Hopefully we will have more than 3 ropes for the large group. I think that we will be tired by 4pm, but I am willing to stay longer if others want to climb more.

    I have changed the meetup start time from 7:45am to 7:30am. This is because I would really like to get the best routes before they are taken by classes. Philip and I plan to arrive at 7:20, wait for people until 7:30, and then head down to the cliff to set ropes. It would be good if others (especially the people with ropes) arrive by 7:30 also so that we could go together.

      The people who will arrive late should use the trail map included in the trip information at the start of this page to find us at the cliff. I recommend following the alternative I marked A on the map. Where the hiking trail cross the creek, you don't cross the creek, but instead follow the climbers trail which is blocked by a fallen tree. Follow the climbers trail for 200 or so yards to Muffins. When you reach Muffins, turn right and walk down the steep slope to the base of the Waterfall Cliff. Do not scramble down on the 3rd class slab; instead walk on the climbers trail past the Muffins and then the trail turns right and down.

    I deleted my early comment about "the meetup not happening on 3/17" that kept confusing people now. The meetup IS happening on Sunday 3/17. Everybody on the "Attending" list is in.

    Will anyone else bring a rope on Sunday? Ideally, we should have at least 3 or 4 ropes if there will be 12 of us.

      March 17th will be tough, as this weekend there is another trip going on. April 14th would be great, especially because we could camp as well (given good weather)!

      March 11, 2013

      I vote 14th of April

      TR Heaven- Awesome! Let's do it April 14th-- because march 31st is Easter and 17th is Irish drinking fest. And the 14th is apparently Ani's bday weekend. lol. Maybe he'll grow out of that beanie this year... ?
