Beginners GYCO at Cragmont

I'll set up some top roping at Cragmont Park in Berkeley for those looking to get some more experience outdoors. If you just started climbing or have been primarily a gym climber, come out and climb on some real rock.

we can go out to pyramid after for some good food and drink!

I'm so sorry I missed this! I did a 20 mile hike yesterday and completely over slept. Just woke up. Jeff, I owe you beers

Why are there always so few spots available for GYCO? I mean cragmont is a free easily accessible spot. Please open things up a bit.

      What does that involve?

Involves creating a meet up, putting in relevant information, helping to coordinate carpools, keeping the flow of communication going back and forth gauging people climbing levels, coordinating ropes and gear with grouo and showing up and being present. It's a very facilitative role, easy simple and fun :)

Anyone interested in a similar event at Castle Rock or somewhere on the West side of the Bay? Sorting out my Sunday schedule by this afternoon. Ping me if you are.

It looks like the RSVP list has shifted a bit. so far i have my rope and Julian's. Will anyone else be able to bring a rope? It'd help get everyone more time climbing.

also, is everyone covered on how they're getting there?

    Hi all,
I just moved to SF and thought my climbing gear (shipped) would have arrived by now but since that's not the case, I'm giving up my spot -
Would definitely love to be in on the next session though!
Have a ton of fun :D

    Hey Everyone!
I just wanted to make sure, I will be bringing my harness, shoes, belay device/carribeaner, and chalk. I don't have a helmet (besides a bike helmet), so if there's any way I can borrow one, I would appreciate it. Also, I live in El Cerrito (only a couple miles from where we are going), and I only have a 2 seater truck, but I can pick someone up at BART if anyone needs a ride to the park. Let me know!

    April 4, 2013

    • Jeff

thanks brian! you're well equipped. I'll have a helmet and when I'm not using it you can borrow it.

Freeing up an open slot due to last minute travel. Sorry to miss this and looking forward to another event!

Such a bummer, something came up and I can't make it anymore. Looking forward to the next trip! And if anyone wants to TR indoors Sunday afternoon instead, msg me!

I just made it on the attending list. Is anyone else driving from SF that wants to carpool? Alternatively I was thinking of BART/biking there if anyone wants to join.

Jeff, rain may impact the rock your climbing so just be aware. If it continues to rain I would suggest pushing this back to following weekend?

    April 4, 2013

    • Jeff

I'll keep an eye on it. It isn't sandstone like castle rock though.

I'll be leaving from San Francisco, and have a spot for someone else

      Check weather too buddy :)

      April 3, 2013

    • Jeff

so far we have chilly with clouds and afternoon wind, but no rain forecasted.

      April 3, 2013

  • Tim

Hi, I've never done outdoor climbing before. I have a harness and shoes. Will I need a helmet also? Anything else?

    April 3, 2013

    • Michael D.

Hey Tim. All you need is a harness and shoes. If you can top rope indoors with 5.7 and above you should do fine outdoors at a locale like Cragmont Park. the difference is the surface your climbing (plastic vs rock althouh I find rock grips better). We just implemented a helmet policy so we strongly recommend that you use one or borrow one of you dont have one.. That is about it. You are one waiting list but the good news is Jeff will be leading more of these in near future (so will I) :)

      April 3, 2013

  • Ray

Could you open it up some if you find more people to set up ropes? I would be happy to bring a rope and set up if it means more people can come.

The park is pretty small, and I don't want to overrun it. Michael had a good idea about setting up another trip- I have to consult my calendar because April is a busy month, unless someone else wants to take the reins?

      March 29, 2013

    • Ray

That's true, it is a small place. And I hadn't looked at the wait list before posting. Hopefully next time, then.

      April 1, 2013

  • Michael D.

Jeff, maybe think about creating another Cragmont for anothe date as well and consider those on waiting lits? I can help you add or tranfer waiting list folks as needed ;)

    March 29, 2013

    • Jeff

I will for sure make another trip! But I won't have another free weekend until end of April.

      March 29, 2013

  • Ayesha R.

I really want to do this - let me know if im in!

    March 28, 2013

  • Michael D.

Thanks Jeff. :) We might consider creating a 2nd meetup for another date if anyone wants to step up and lead/co lead?
