Climbing at the Needles, Sequoia (Kern County)

  • Jun 13, 2013 · 7:00 PM

I have a campsite reserved for June 13 - June 16 at Quaking Aspen and we have room for 4 more people. Planning to do some climbing in the area: Dome Rock, Kernville, and the Needles themselves of course. I've never been to the area so it will be a more of an adventurous/exploration type of outing. If you'd like to join, just let me know.

It promises to be a few days of awesome climbing (fingers crossed!)

From Mountain Project:
"It has been said that the Needles themselves are home to the highest density of classic routes anywhere"

More info: http://www.mountainproject.com/v/the-needles--kern-river/105834180

NOTE:

The climbing here is mostly trad and multipitch. If you can lead 5.8+ trad you'll have more fun. Especially if you think you're ready to break into the 5.9. I'm not comfortable taking a party of 3 on a multipitch route so bring along your climbing partner :) or communicate through the site to find one.

I'm not much of an "organizer" per se, this is more like "I'm going to be here on this date, come join if you like".

So far we got 5: (me +1), Denilou, Justine, and Jonathan.

We can take maybe 1 more person on our rental car. Where is everyone leaving from?

    June 10, 2013

    • CaroCaro

Denilou: we'll be waiting for you on Friday :) - if J&M want to do something else, Chris, I and you can form a party of 3 as well. No worries.

Denilou, I'm happy with that. I'm relying on you guys for gear because I'm visiting from South Africa so I only have my basic personal gear along, so really I'll take whatever's going!

dang, woke up to rotator cuff pain after climbing too many ow, hoping for speedy recovery but I would have to bail :'( If someone is leaving Friday and badly in need of a partner I could be convinced.... so many things I want to climb there!

Sorry to hear that Johnny. Haven't seen you in a while. Hope it heals quickly.

thanks Mark, I need to save my shoulder for the 3rd pillar in a few weeks!

    Campsite info is:

    Direction:
From Porterville, California, take Highway 190 East to Springville. Continue from Springville approximately 28 miles to the Quaking Aspen Campground.

We also had some really good food at the only Taco Trunk in Earlimart, if you guys end up passing through that "town"

So here's the guidebook to the area (+BONUS): https://www.dropbox.com/l/oq6eKZYJ651NFNWV1FYvPb Hopefully the link works. Let me know if it's not and I'll email it to you instead.

Hi guys, sorry for being MIA - out of the country for the last 2 weeks. So there's only 4 spots available. Can you update your RSVP status in case you change your mind?

I have some PDF's of the area someone graciously shared with me. I'll send the link to the group once it's finalized.

From some TR's I've read, expect some bushwhacking, adventurous descents, and the probability of ending up doing more hiking than climbing.

Johnny and Denilou, hope you guys can make it. It might cut down our time being lost and bushwhacking by quite a bit. No pressure here :)

I just want to clarify that you need to be comfortable w/ multipitch climbing and being independent. I'm not an organizer, just someone looking to share a campsite and swap stories at the end of the day.

Awesome guys! Well, if I could ride with one of you two and, Jonathan, if I could pair with you, that would be awesome! I was told 5.10a is like a South African 16, but I don't know if that's true. Maybe I got it wrong. I can't lead that though, I can second that and lead a couple of grades lower.

I'm still planning to go. I can leave Thursday night; I live in Palo Alto. However, I don't have a partner lined up. If someone needs a partner who is a solid 5.8 crack leader and 5.9 face leader, I'm you're man. I'm working on 5.9 cracks but don't feel I'm quite ready to lead a sustained 5.9.

Sorry, I injured by shoulder last weekend and need to recover.

Caro, what site # do you have? I'm thinking I might grab an extra site -- there seem to be several still available. It would be great if I could get one near yours.

    June 9, 2013

    • CaroCaro

Hi Denilou - that'd be an awesome idea! I think we're pretty early enough in the season so we could def grab extra sites if more people are coming. I got site #9.

      June 10, 2013

    • CaroCaro

Although I might just hold out for a bit and see the total # of peep who are confirmed to go. Many RSVP'd very early on and plans change all the time.

Hey there. Can we get some more info on grades/ratings for the climbs available? I'm happy with trad and multipitch but Not seriously high grade climbs. I don't want to find myself out of my depth unexpectedly :) Thanks!

Sounds incredible. I assume we have enough guides or local knowledge to find routes and descents? Can we talk about carpooling and camping/feeding arrangements?

I'd love to join, but probably can't take Friday off from work so would only be able to come up Friday night. I have climbed at Needles several times, so know my way around there pretty well, but it's been a while and I've never done anything at Dome Rock.

    June 7, 2013

  • Jonathan B.

I heard the Needles is like Yosemite in its rock quality but without the crowds. SO KEEN.

Hey. I'm visiting from SAfrica, so no car, tent or partner, but have my personal gear. Can climb max 5.10b but I only lead 5.7. Anyone want to pair up?

    June 2, 2013

  • Peter

Turns out I am the one that can not get off work.

    May 31, 2013

Hi, I'm new to the area and new to the US. I don't have a car but I do have a trad rack and lead 5.11. Would it be possible to catch a ride with somebody?
    Cheers
    Jonathan

What climbing experience to you need to have for this climbing trip?

    May 9, 2013

    • Johnny

Mostly trad, and most of the moderate classics are multi-pitch, other than that, be ready for some bushwacking :)

      May 9, 2013

  • Johnny

Would love to come but have to check my schedule, been there once at dome rock and voodoo, great climbing, no crowd

    May 9, 2013

    • CaroCaro

Hope you can make it. Btw, we're on for Bugaboos (got our flights). You're still up for it? :)

      May 9, 2013

    • Johnny

yea saw your update for Bugs, as much as I love to, since I am taking a week off climbing in June (not including this one) and another one at end of July, it would be hard to squeeze more vacation into my boring work life :( Are you guys driving down Thursday night? If I come I can contribute approach + descent beta because that's what killed us last time at voodoo.

      May 9, 2013

  • Peter

Thanks for sharing your site! I hope to have a partner but they may not be able to get days off so wont add them yet.
