Goat Rock & Sunset Boulders - Sonoma State Park Beach

Hey Guys,

Auburn quarry is going to be 109 degrees which is way to hot as the rock is exposed, this could impact the belay and carabiners so I am making the conscious decision to go toward the beach where it is cooler to Goat Rock and Sunset Boulders and Sonoma State park beach near Jenner (past Bodega Bay). Beautiful crags in the middle of grass surrounded by sand and beautiful ocean. Breathtaking. 6 TR routes, easy to intermediate. 11 bouldering problems. great rock to climb :)

What do you need?

*Helmet, harness & shoes.
*Rope, quick draws
*Snacks and water.
*Layers in case it gets cold

Carpools encouraged. Bring lunch like a picnic.

I will Be waiting at the dirt Parking lot Entrance. We can all meet here and then be on our way to start climbing!

Hey guys, its gonna be 92 tomorrow so bring your sunscreen, lots of water, a blanket maybe to lay on grass, sand or rocks, a lunch, a beach chair maybe, and those that have ropes dont forget them. After we can grab dinner in Bodega Bay or comparable. You guys will love how beautiful this place is :)

Hi Michael, I was really looking forward to the sport climbing, but I understand it's no fun in the heat. I checked the topos for Goat rock - it seems to be more trad and/bouldering, which is not so much my thing - sorry, but I'm going to opt out of this one. I think someone is still on the wait list that can take my place? Many thanks!

      Did you and Richard connect?

Hey all, I'm also still looking for a ride. I'm from Oakland/Lake Merritt but happy to meet at any BART station. Also - do we still need rope/draws? I have mine but it's with a friend in SF. I can grab it before the trip if we still need it for the day.

Sorry to bail - I don't boulder. Maybe I'm crazy, but 6 TR's is not enough to get me out all day right before a 3 week business trip.

      June 3, 2013

hey guys. it is gonna be a scorcher in Auburn. so much so it will tire us out, get us hot and irritable in the blazing sun so I proposed we go to the beautiful most awesome venue at Sonoma Coast State Park - Goat Rock area right on the BEACH :) It is a little past Bodega Bay near Jenner. 2 hrs away. I have ropes draws and even an extra harness. I live near Auburn. I just wanted everyone to know they are predicting a high of 109 on Saturday. Bring lots of water.

    1 · June 3, 2013

    • Michael D.

I saw 102 on weather.com. still it is hot. Ive been to the quarry when it was hot and we retreated to the shady routes. But we do have that awesome river. I cant stand hot but if I can do it you guys can do it OR we can consider a cooler local venue if you prefer like Sonoma State Park beach/Goat Rock?

    May 18, 2013

  • Jason A.

    Funny, went here last weekend!

Here are some thoughts I hope will be helpful for those who haven't been here before:

    - Download a PDF with all the routes here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-JljyzNho-YVzZwbVVWd1FwTmM/edit

    - Although I think the Wreckage Wall/Twin Towers area definitely has the best collection of routes, it's in the sun all day and it gets rather hot. If the shade is preferred, the Lower Quarry has some shaded portions all day.

    - I thought the best routes in the Lower Quarry were...
Uncomfortably Dumb (10a/b) on Horseshoe Canyon:
    http://mountainproject.com/v/uncomfortably-dumb/105735125
Great stemming like a gym route, well protected

Caught Inside (10c) on Surf Tower:
    http://mountainproject.com/v/caught-inside/105735314
The only route on the formation. The 10C part is all up to the first 2 clips via some fun sustained bouldering and edging moves. The rest of the route, while chossy in spots, is an easy romp with great position around aretes and mini roofs.

    May 17, 2013

    • Michael D.

haha. no worries. beta is beta. Im glad you listed PDF file as I forgot that piece. just printed out copies for the group And Uncomfortably Dumb was scary to lead at first (last Sept) as there was still rock falling. a huge rock almost hit me by 3 inches. :) Dave who?
